The ideal candidate for the role of Primary School counselor is an individual with an expertise in childhood development, with a concentration of experience with children ages three to six years old. Practice guiding and consulting with parents, along with having an understanding of educational behavior management, social skills and character development, and working with students with social/emotional needs will be necessary skills for this role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Provide scheduled/regular individual support for students
Assess classroom needs for guidance class topics; schedule, plan, and teach age-appropriate monthly guidance lessons for Early Learner, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classes
Form small play groups to teach, guide, and monitor social interactions
Communicate regularly and consistently with parents and teachers, when needed, while allowing appropriate levels of confidentiality; provide regular communication via email/website
Create, when needed, and oversee behavior management systems and plans for students who need additional social/emotional/behavioral support
Serve as active participant in LST meetings and follow through with determined plans
Meet with teaching teams to assist with student needs/concerns
Understand bullying definitions and the type of investigation needed to assess bullying situations
Provide insight on admission team regarding new student applicants
Assist during Admission and after school parent events (Open Houses, Observation Days, parent education opportunities, etc)
Participate on required school committees working toward school-wide goals
Participate in associated duties such as carpool, lunch, and recess

General Duties and Responsibilities
The role of the Primary School Counselor is to:
Assist students, faculty and parents with intervention in emotional and academic situations by:
providing short-term counseling and making referrals for outside support
participating in Primary School student life by actively engaging in the community
providing insight during anecdotal sessions and maintaining detailed records
offering guidance and strategies to teachers and parents
engaging in classroom observations and providing feedback to parents/teachers
Provide responsive services to students’ immediate and future needs necessitated by events and conditions in students’ lives and the school climate and culture by:
small group and individual counseling on “as needed” basis
individual/family/school crisis intervention
consultation with parents, teachers, nurses, and administrators
Serve as a resource and source of expertise in the community (re: childhood development of the preschool-aged child), and in the process:
work with Primary School faculty to promote a positive emotional and academic climate
strengthen effective advocacy for student needs throughout the school
promote constructive communication among all members of the community
provide parent education focused on the developmental issues of young children
advocate for the school community by understanding and supporting efforts of diversity and inclusion

Experience: Classroom experience preferred.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret educational research, professional journals (both in print and electronic format). Ability to write student reports, newsletters and publishable classroom updates using technology. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from students, parents, colleagues, and, at times, the general public.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations such as grading, budgeting for materials, calculating field trip costs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
Persons applying for this position must have a Master’s Degree in school counseling or community counseling, and individuals with a play therapy background will be preferred. 3-5 years experience is preferred.
