The Ethel Walker School is a vibrant, academically-focused all-girls college-preparatory secondary school of 250 students (6-8 day, 9-12 boarding and day) in Simsbury, CT that seeks an experienced, highly motivated individual to serve as the Director of Operations and Facilities beginning immediately. This position oversees various aspects of the school dealing with the operations of the physical plant and directs the maintenance and improvement operations of facilities and vehicles, including preventative maintenance and related budgets. This position reports to the Chief Financial Officer and the Head of School.
Collaborates with school leadership to develop and implement strategies for efficient operation of safe and sustainable facilities and grounds in support of The Ethel Walker School’s values, mission and financial goals.
Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs assigned staff and volunteers. Reviews and evaluates performance & develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
Develops and maintains a consistent department image by implementing staff-wide initiatives and producing a quality customer-service-oriented maintenance service.
Oversees all contractors that work in the facility and grounds. Solicit quotes, evaluate and select outside contractors and manage the fulfillment of the contract by monitoring performance and ensuring satisfactory completion before authorizing final payment.
Works with outside agencies such as fire, health, building depts., etc. to ensure compliance with all local, state and federal regulations related to facilities and grounds.
Develops budgets supporting the preventative and annual maintenance plans and monitors expenditures against budget.
Advises management on maintenance issues and projects as requested.
Oversees safety and security on campus.
Provides overall coordination of facility maintenance, including planning and developing preventative maintenance.
Strive for continuous improvement and innovation in facilities and grounds management and in departmental organization by setting appropriate standards and ensuring quality control.
Conducts regular inspection of all school facilities, grounds and equipment to ensure high standards of safety, attractiveness and cleanliness campus-wide.
Completes repair work and projects in a timely manner.
Ensures that vehicles are maintained and operated in accordance with all state statutes appropriately.
Updates facility plans periodically. Develops annual plan of capital projects and deferred maintenance & reports progress to management and board.
Performs other duties as assigned
Develops campus safety program including staff oversight and the refinement of emergency response protocols, procedures, documentation, implementation and training.

Effective communications and attention to detail with capacities to manage multiple projects.
Skilled at project planning, management of construction scheduling and cost estimating.
Effective leader and staff manager, with strong service orientation needed in a school community.
Ability to manage capital projects; develop, coordinate and communicate plans, report on progress in an environment of accountability.
Knowledge of athletic field maintenance, landscaping and pesticide management in a school setting and on a campus with livestock preferred.
Fluency on OSHA job safety requirements
Bachelor's degree in facility management,mechanical engineering or a related field or relevant experience.
Three or more years experience in facility management or closely related field.
Working knowledge of and experience managing mechanical, electrical, HVAC and plumbing, carpentry, and other maintenance-related areas.
Skills in supervision, budget management and project management.
Computer skills including: Microsoft office suite (EXCEL, Word) and CMMS software (SchoolDude)
Ability to respond to safety and emergency situations.
