Hackley School (www.hackleyschool.org), founded in 1899, is a K-12 co-educational, college preparatory school serving 840 students. Located in Tarrytown, NY, approximately 30 minutes from Manhattan, the school boasts a picturesque campus spanning 285 acres that includes historic buildings, athletic fields, forests and trails. Hackley has made a strong and broad commitment to health and wellness, underscoring the recognition that social, emotional, intellectual, physical, and spiritual health are interrelated to teaching and learning. The Johnson Center for Health & Wellness, a 100,000+ square foot building, is currently under construction and will open in the winter of 2017-2018. In addition to providing exceptional space to support the school’s physical education and athletic programs, it provides a platform from which the school’s expanded Health & Wellness programs can grow. The building will include a swimming pool, double basketball courts, 8 squash courts, a modified track, fencing and wellness studios, three classrooms, office space, free weight room, a cardio-fitness center, locker rooms, student common areas and a teaching kitchen. In approving the plan, the Board shared that the Center “extends our commitment to our founders’ vision for a community where it should be easy to be good into our second century.”
Hackley has already embraced a wide array of programming, ranging from mindfulness and meditation practices to nutrition education and fitness activities including yoga and walks in the Hackley Forest. Lower School teachers established a garden where students learn to plant, cultivate, taste and write about healthy foods through an integrated curriculum approach.
Additionally, faculty partake in a full range of wellness and well-being practices in partnership with colleagues.
As the Center moves towards completion, Hackley is seeking an energetic, inspiring, collaborative and knowledgeable educational leader to serve as the school’s Director of Wellness Services and Education, helping the school realize its goal of emphasizing the importance of health and wellness in its community.
The Director of Wellness Services and Education will report to the Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs, serve as Chair of the Health Department, supervise the Director of Support Services, School Nurse, Health and Physical Education Departments, and serve as a conduit for and champion of best practices in health and wellness education and policy for the Hackley community. In addition, the Director of Wellness Services and Education will:
Possess a deep understanding of health education and wellness practices, along with the ability to link these content areas to K-12 curricula and pedagogies
Have the skills and experiences necessary to translate research on wellness and health into a K-12 teaching and learning environment, especially as it relates to the intersection of social and emotional health on cognition
Lead faculty professional development related to the integration of research-based teaching and learning practices that promote deep learning and student wellness
Coordinate with Division Directors (Lower, Middle, and Upper School) on integration and revision of curricula
Create a comprehensive approach, timeline, and budget for wellness work at Hackley over the next 3 to 5 years, including benchmarking data and metrics for successful ?implementation
Develop a comprehensive wellness program for students and adults - including facilities and supplies requirements - for use and integration in the new Johnson Center for Health and Wellness, as well as broadly throughout the campus
Advocate for and advise on healthy, sustainable practices and policies throughout all ?areas of the school
Oversee a team of faculty and staff in the creation and delivery of a dynamic and relevant health and physical education curriculum
Ensure successful integration of wellness practices into the coaching of middle school, junior varsity, and varsity level teams
Serve as a spokesperson for the school on issues of health and wellness, particularly as related to the role of socio-emotional health on learning
Communicate with and subsequently engage parents as partners in supporting school wellness initiatives
Present updates to the Board of Trustees and engage this group in broad thinking about wellness in the Hackley community.
