Founded in 1794 and located on 104 acres in Cheshire, CT, Cheshire Academy (www.Cheshireacademy.org) is an independent college preparatory school serving 430 boarding and day school students in grades eight through post-graduate year. Cheshire Academy is the tenth oldest private school in the United States.
We are seeking an experienced, engaged and appropriately motivated Chief Development Officer with strong strategic and tactical management skills and an aligned vision to helping Cheshire Academy realize its long-term goals. This position will report to the Head of School and is a member of the Senior Leadership Team. The Chief Development Officer will direct a team of 6 full-time employees and 2 part-time employees.
Specifically, the role requires:
Planning, developing and implementing a multi-year strategic plan of action, and Cases for fundraising at multiple levels, including identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of constituents.
Serving as Ambassador for the school and helping to share and sell the strategy, Cases for fundraising, and vision of the school, while being able to listen effectively in the marketplace in order to perceive what motivates each donor.
Adept command of data to drive decision making. Performing comprehensive data manipulation and analysis to evaluate current programs and make recommendations for program changes.
Expert use of current best practices in the fundraising space but creativity and innovation applied as appropriate to create an approach tailored to Cheshire and its needs.
Building, developing, and leading a team in a way that is consistent with Cheshire’s culture. Designing a structure, process, and performance metrics to hold the Development Team accountable.
Working closely with the Board of Trustees – and other key constituencies, including senior administrators, faculty, and the Communications Team - to engage them in the strategy and vision of the fundraising effort.
SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE The successful candidate will have a demonstrable track record of fundraising, preferably in the academic arena but not necessarily limited to this area. This person will be able to demonstrate:
Knowledge of the principles and best practices associated with fundraising in independent schools and a demonstrated track record of success in soliciting and closing charitable gifts.
Strong technical and analytical skills, including expertise in fundraising data programs and the ability to leverage social media.
The highest degree of professionalism. Demonstrating leadership and gravitas to reflect the brand of the school.
Persuasive written and verbal skills commensurate with the various audiences. Strong attention to detail.
A results-oriented nature and the ability to work well with people at all levels of an organization, warmly developing relationships with diverse constituencies while simultaneously employing keen judgment.
A passion for being a part of Cheshire’s community and a commitment to the mission, programs, and future aspirations of the school.
Effective leadership and management plus mentoring skills and a collaborative administrative style based on authenticity and trust. This should be evidenced by prior development and management of high performance teams in the field.
