The Allen-Stevenson School announces a search for a Director of Development, reporting directly to the Headmaster. This high-profile position will lead the School’s Development Office, work closely with the Headmaster and the Trustees to oversee the conclusion of a current $50 million capital campaign for a new townhouse construction and athletic facility, develop and steward current major donors, and cultivate a sustained leadership gift program for the future. The Director will work closely with the Headmaster and the Trustees on the planning, design, and leadership of Allen-Stevenson’s continued major gifts initiative that will support the current construction and grow the School’s endowment in the future. The annual operating budget of The Allen-Stevenson School is $23 million and the School’s endowment is currently valued at approximately $26 million. Over the last three years, Allen-Stevenson received an average of $2.6 million in annual giving. Over the last ten years, parent participation has been an average of 97%.
The Director of Development will be responsible for the leadership and day-to-day planning, coordination and management of the multi-member Development Office, which includes Director of Alumni Relations, Director of Annual and Parent Giving, Campaign Coordinator, Database Manager and Alumni Liaison. The role entails working collaboratively with members of the Allen-Stevenson Development staff, the Board of Trustees, Communications Department, parent and alumni volunteers as well as providing fundraising counsel on all matters related to alumni relations, annual giving, capital campaign, planned giving and major gifts. The position is both strategic and tactical, incorporating all components of the Capital Campaign. The Development Department is immersed in many aspects of school life, leads planning for some school events, including Grandparents & Special Friends Day and the Ninth Grade Dinner, among others—and is instrumental in building a sense of community. The position requires a Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 10–15 years of experience in alumni relations, annual giving, major gifts, capital campaigns, and community building. Familiarity with NYC philanthropy and independent school experience are strongly preferred.
The Allen-Stevenson School, approaching its 135th anniversary, is an independent school for boys in New York City, serving 420 boys, grades Kindergarten through Grade 9.

Specific responsibilities include:
Lead, mentor, manage, and support development operations, and shape the development office into an integrated and coordinated team
Work closely with the Board of Trustees, including the Trustees and Development Committees, and other volunteers
Identify and research prospective donors from all constituencies, including parents, alumni, grandparents and past parents, and develop individual donor strategy at every step of the process - cultivation, briefing, solicitation, closing and stewardship
Work with the Headmaster and other members of the community to solicit and close major gifts for the School’s Annual Fund and Capital Campaign
Develop and maintain fundraising documents, including cultivation brochures, donor profiles, briefing materials and solicitation tools
Draft, review and approve proposals for major donor prospects and foundations
Oversee robust stewardship plan, including donor acknowledgements, gifts, and updates
Schedule and staff Development and Trustee Committees meetings
Direct the process for soliciting the 800+ donors to the School’s Annual Fund, including managing and supporting the parent and alumni volunteers
Responsible for annual development department budget
Identify, implement and evaluate research tools and donor databases
Design and execute fundraising strategic plan with Board Development Committee
Set and benchmark fundraising goals for all programs
Identify and research potential candidates for the Board of Trustees and manage the nomination and selection process with the Chair of the Trustees Committee
Oversee donor communications, including the Annual Report and donor appeals
