Job Summary: Canterbury School is seeking a dynamic, joyful, creative and experienced Kindergarten Prep teacher who has a thorough understanding of child development to join our expert faculty. Kindergarten-Prep (K-Prep) is a unique grade offering at Canterbury School designed for academically strong students who would benefit from additional foundations for executive function growth to develop all the competencies needed for solid success in Kindergarten and beyond. K-Prep students attend Monday - Friday 8:00 a.m. to 1:15 p.m. and are taught by a credentialed Teacher as well as a Teaching Assistant. Students matriculate to Kindergarten after completing this year of K-Prep.
Responsibilities include:
- Create a warm, loving, safe, and equitable learning environment for young children
- Culturally and developmentally appropriate instruction and assessment for 14-16 students in all major curricular areas: phonological awareness, phonics, reading, writing, math, science, social studies, and fine arts (including visual arts, theater, culinary arts, and architecture)
- Enable students to learn experientially through play, outdoor education, field trips, ‘hands on’ multisensory learning, and creative expression
- Regular communication via newsletters, phone calls, or emails with parents/guardians
- Deep collaboration with Early Childhood and Kindergarten Teachers, Teaching Assistants, Specialist Area Teachers, and Support Staff
- Active participation in faculty meetings and professional development activities
- Perform other related duties as may be assigned
Qualifications:
- Masters in Early Childhood or Elementary Education or Bachelors in Early Childhood or Elementary Education
- Significant classroom teaching experience; 5 year minimum preferred
- Excellent verbal communication skills and organizational skills
- Outstanding written skills for communication and documentation, including written narrative reports
- Knowledge of and experience with social, emotional, physical, and cognitive needs of the early grades
- Experience with early reading (Orton-Gillingham experience preferred) and mathematical instructional strategies
- Experience in and commitment to developing one’s own cultural competency and seeking, continually, greater levels of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging in practices and curricula
- Ability to work successfully with colleagues
- Flexibility, tact, and grace in talking with parents/guardians
- Ability to integrate subject matter
