Senior House Parent – Summer Programs
We are seeking energetic and enthusiastic Senior House Parents to support the Boarding Coordinator and to ensure consistency of care for our overnight Summer Camps.
Reporting to the Boarding Coordinator, the Senior House Parent provides leadership and guidance to House Parents when the Boarding Coordinator is not available. This position requires spending time with boarders and staff to establish a rapport based on mutual trust, respect, and understanding.
Work Schedule:
June 26, 2024: required orientation session.
July 2 – August 16, 2024:
Typical weekday shifts are 4pm to 11 pm, and then 7am to 9am the following day. Weekends often involve overnight off-campus trips. You will be expected to work an average of approximately 40 duty hours per week. In addition to the duty hours, House Parents are required to be on call in the boarding house at least three evenings per week, between the hours of 11:00 pm and 7:00 am. Being on-call involves remaining in the boarding house during the on-call hours.
Responsibilities include:
- Supervise morning, afternoon and evening check-in.
- Coordinates whole-dorm laundry o laundry days.
- Join and support evening and weekend activities.
- Pick-up and drop-off at the airport (Victoria and Vancouver) or ferry.
- When necessary, organize care for boarders who are ill.
- Provide coverage when other house parents are unavailable.
- Facilitate boarder’s experience and provide support with adapting to the boarding environment.
- Assist with boarder-related administrative tasks, including overseeing medication storage and record-keeping.
- Open and close buildings on campus as required.
- Supervise Student Ambassadors and ensure they are providing an engaging environment for our boarders.
- Maintain a daily communication log.
- Submit Maintenance and Housekeeping requests as needed.
- Oversee and coordinate arrivals and departures including supervision of boarders.
- Ensure boarders are adhering to the expectations set for behavior within the boarding houses.
- Attend weekly collaborative meetings with the Boarding team.
- Act as backup for the Activity Coordinator.
Experience and Qualifications:
- Completed or enrolled in relevant post-secondary education such as Business, Recreation, or Education.
- At least 1 year of experience working with youth aged 12-17.
- Previous experience in a St. Michael’s University School Boarding Program would be an asset.
- Experience working in a multicultural environment.
- Understanding of the particular developmental and emotional needs of adolescents.
- Ability to work cooperatively and develop positive working relationships with international students.
- Effective written and oral communication skills and the ability to request and convey information in an appropriate manner.
- Ability to follow instructions and work independently.
- Working knowledge of a second language would be an asset.
- Ability to communicate in a tactful and diplomatic manner.
- Basic First Aid training.
- Class 4 unrestricted driver’s license, or the ability and willingness to obtain one considered an asset.
- WHMIS training.

Criminal Record Check:
Must pass and maintain a clear Solicitor General criminal record check for the purpose of working with children.
