The Assistant Librarian will assist in the carrying out the day to day operations of the Polytechnic Upper School Library by providing normal library services to all patrons during designated library hours. They will help ensure that all decisions and actions comply with the relevant school/ library policies and procedures. The ability to deal with students and faculty in a courteous, professional and respectful manner is essential to the success of the library.
Reporting to the Director of the Upper School, the Assistant Librarian will take a student-centered approach to all school work and will use the school’s mission to design and support the academic, extracurricular, social, and emotional success of students.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Instruct students on how to use the library and its materials effectively for research and information purposes providing assistance to and in-depth conferences with students and faculty as needed;
- Empower and instruct students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, informed consumers, and ethical users of information;
- Collaborate with and instruct teachers on developing information and media literacy and research lessons associated with classroom projects;
- Supervise and mentor students so their behavior supports the library’s academic and social-emotional purpose;
- In conjunction with the Librarian, develop policies and programming to establish standards for and definitions of information literacy and contribute to an information-literate student body;
- Collaborate with academic departments on specific needs;
- Maintain an attractive, dynamic, and current library conducive to reading, studying, and instruction;
- Evaluate, catalog, classify, and efficiently organize all print and non-print material in support of the school’s programs;
- Engage robustly in fostering diversity, equity, and inclusion to promote a healthy learning environment;
- Network with local librarians, maintains active memberships in professional associations, and promotes the school in the wider community;
- Enthusiastically participate in the greater life of the school, particularly extracurricular activities as an advisor or spectator and chaperone;
- Serve as a grade-level advisor as needed;
- Be available to parents, students, administration, and colleagues outside the school day when needed;
- Willing to take on other duties as needed.
QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree. Advanced degree in library science;
- Three or more years of experience in the field preferred;
- Work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time;
- Ability to collaborate with teachers, as well as teach and supervise students;
- Ability to work collaboratively and methodically with students, parents, faculty, and staff on a regular basis;
- Strong computer skills including previous use of an integrated library system, use of various databases and other electronic resources, and internet searching expertise;
- Superb organizational skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively as a team member;
- Ability to manage competing demands and adapt to frequent or unexpected changes.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
- Work in an environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges and deadlines, as well as a diverse array of contacts;
- Work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time;
- Ability to lift up to 30 lbs.;
- Work primarily in a traditional climate-controlled classroom environment;
- Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
