The Dean of Boys has the primary responsibility for implementing those parts of the school mission that address student life and the educational and extracurricular needs of young men. The Dean is also responsible for the use of the Cranbrook campus as an education facility. The Dean works together with the Dean of Girls to insure consistency and coordination of school programs. The Dean of Boys reports to the Head of the Upper School and resides on campus.
Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
Supervise the boys’ residential program and work in coordination with the Head House Adviser to implement programming and policy, oversee staffing, set tone and create a sense of community.
Commits to making a positive impact on the lives of adolescents and a demonstrates enthusiasm for the challenges of the boarding school environment
Coordinates with Head House Advisor assignments of duty teams and RA/RHC selection
Meets regularly with Head House Advisor to set agenda for weekly meetings and to discuss issues that surface during the week
Supervises dormitory senior administrative assistant and communicates regularly with her regarding sit-down dinners, student health issues and dormitory needs
Monitors overall dorm and dean budgets
Evaluates Head House Advisor and works in conjunction with her/him to evaluate other house advisors
Helps to design activities that are age appropriate, healthy, fun and beneficial for boarders
Acts as part of the residential staff with shifts every other week and three to four weekend duties a year
Communicates with parents of boarders at the beginning of the year, over the course of the year and whenever they drop in for impromptu chats
Coordinates activities with Dean of Girls and Head House Advisor for Kingswood campus
Oversees final boarder room selection with Head House Advisor
Responsible for the direct supervision of the Head House Advisor, Senior Administrative Assistant and Administrative Assistant. In coordination with the Head House Adviser, oversees the House Advisers and Assistant House Advisers.
Works with counselors, faculty, advisers, and families to insure that students receive individual counseling and support when appropriate. Counsels students individually as needed.
Works with campus nurse and weekend nurse to assure appropriate services for all students on the campus.
Responsible for disciplinary process in coordination with the Dean of Girls concerning both major and minor infractions of school rules; co-chairs the Conduct Review Board, communicates major discipline decisions to all students, parents and faculty involved in the matter.
In conjunction with the Academic Deans, Dean of Girls and Lead Counselor is responsible for the adviser/advisee program, including the assigning of advisees to all advisee groups and programming for meetings throughout the year.
In conjunction with the Dean of Girls, works with student leadership for student organizations and activities, including overseeing dances and activities proposed by student groups and organizations.
In conjunction with the Dean of Girls, revises and edits the Student Handbook annually.
Responsible for daily operation of the Cranbrook campus, including:
Assembly programs and calendar
Driving and parking rules in coordination with Public Safety
Working with Chartwells on special meal planning
Planning and helping to execute all emergency drills for the Cranbrook campus
Working with the maintenance supervisor to assure needed cleaning and repairs on the Cranbrook campus
Working with the Operations Director, the Director of Administrative Services and the Head of the Upper School to assess facilities’ needs and renovation
Working with the Director of Administrative services in monitoring the use of the campus by outside groups
Responsible in coordination with the Cranbrook faculty, for maintaining a tone of courtesy, respect and community on the Cranbrook campus.
Member of the Upper School Leadership Team, the Admissions Committee, the Students Concerns Committee; co-chairs the Transgender Committee.
Speaks at board and parent meetings as needed, including, but not limited to New Parent Orientation meetings, Mother’s Council meetings, grade level meetings, and Education and Residential Life Committee meetings.
Strong administrative leadership skills.
Minimum of a Master’s degree.
Five or more years of experience in counseling and/or administration in a school setting working with adolescents preferred.
A clear commitment to professional development through courses and workshops, indicating a growth mindset around counseling and adolescents.
Demonstrated ability to maintain confidentiality.
A cursory knowledge of school law, Title IX and best practices for deans of students is beneficial.
The ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, with students, parents, faculty and administrators.
The ability to resolve problems, discipline, and counsel students, and problem solve with students, faculty and parents.

About Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School
Cranbrook Schools, located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, is comprised of three coordinated educational divisions with students ranging from early childhood to the twelfth grade. Together the coed lower school, single-sex middle schools and coed upper school serve more than 1,600 students. Housed on two internal campuses, Cranbrook Kingswood Upper School offers a rigorous college-preparatory program in a day/boarding environment. There are approximately 800 students in grades 9-12 in the upper school, including 260 residential students from across the country and around the world.
