The Gunnery is seeking candidates for Language Department Chair with experience in the classroom and in curriculum development. The department chair will help guide the Language curriculum at The Gunnery--helping Language Department faculty develop their own teaching, bringing varied pedagogical approaches into the classroom, and fostering a collaborative atmosphere within the department. The department chair will participate in the full scope of the boarding school faculty model which includes, but is not limited to, teaching, coaching, and serving as an advisor, as well as dorm and weekend duties.
The general responsibilities of a Department Chair at The Gunnery:
Fosters a collegial, team-oriented environment within the department.
Makes sure each department member feels respected; ensures that each teacher knows that his/her voice is heard and heeded.
Delegates responsibilities in order to promote the value of a shared approach.
Observes classes and provides honest, supportive, and helpful feedback to colleagues.
Supervises and facilitates observations within the department.
Supervises the goal-setting process within the department.
Supervises and initiates changes/revisions to departmental curriculum.
Supervises the hiring process for new members of the department.
Supervises the course enrollment process.
Supervises the staffing process.
Inspires colleagues to invest in ongoing curriculum review and development.
Inspires colleagues to pursue professional development.
Organizes and facilitates department meetings.
Represents the department and its perspective at Curriculum Committee meetings.
Works with fellow department chairs on department and interdepartmental initiatives.
Communicates effectively with the Dean of Faculty and Assistant Head for Teaching and Learning about departmental concerns.
Manages department budget.
Specifically, the Language Department Chair should:
Have experience in curriculum development particularly at the high school level and ideally representing both horizontal and vertical thinking
Have background in various pedagogical approaches to language instruction
Ideally can teach both Spanish and French
Have a willingness to teach any level of a particular language and recognize the importance of a department chair doing so
Be able to effectively assess placement tests for the purposes of individual student placement but also for the purpose of examining the effectiveness of the test itself as an indicator of one’s command of the language and requisite language skills
Help guide the Language Department through a process of constant evaluation and examination of our offerings in order to ensure we are meeting both the needs of our current students and incoming students while also balanced against relevant trends in language instruction
Have a willingness to possibly organize, coordinate, or lead language immersion trips
