The Primary School Learning Specialist reports to the PS Learning Support Coordinator and the Head of the Primary School at the Atlanta International School, and has responsibilities in four principal areas:
Observation, Identification and Initial Assessment of Learning Difficulties
Observes students (referred by teachers, parents, and administrators) in their classroom settings.
Identifies children experiencing learning or behavior difficulties.
Assesses the difficulty in consultation with the teacher(s) and the parents.
Implementation of Classroom Learning Strategies
Assists the teacher(s) in implementing successful strategies to improve the learning of the students who have been identified.
Provides the staff with general information about various learning difficulties as well as strategies to deal with them.
Facilitates individual or group sessions in a pull out setting when additional support is needed.
Facilitates individual, group or whole class sessions in a classroom setting when additional support is needed.
Participates in parent meetings as needed.
Communicates regularly with the families of children with whom they are working directly.
Works closely with the teachers of these students and with the administration to ensure clear and timely communications about their situations.
Keeps the Learning Support Coordinator informed about the student progress, interventions, accommodations and collaboration with class teachers.
Keeps up to date records of communication and makes entries in confidential files so support can be tracked and monitored.
The Primary School Learning Specialist is a member of the Student Support team and attends relevant grade level meetings.
It is expected that candidates for this position will meet the following basic requirements:
Minimum of 5 years learning support, resource experience and or Special Education teaching certificate or related credentials.
