The Currie Family Director of the Tang Institute will lead and advance the strategic objectives of the Tang Institute, an incubation lab for innovative approaches to teaching and learning. Founded in 2014, the Tang Institute is a home for ideas at Phillips Academy and offers a platform for seeding, developing, assessing, and growing creative faculty-led initiatives. The directorship is a six-year appointment.
As the Institute enters into its fourth year of official operations in Fall 2018, the Director will guide the implementation and operations of its core program areas, including projects focused on: global programming, hybrid and online learning, digital platforms and resources, metacognition and character development, interdisciplinary efforts, and a range of other topics.
Working closely with a strong team, the ideal candidate is a proven leader and collaborator. The Director will be passionate about supporting innovative pedagogical, teaching and learning practices and aware of promising trends in education. The successful candidate will have a capacity to work with a range of collaborators, both internal and external, to deepen the impact of the projects that the Institute is supporting. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct all activities and day-to-day operations of the Institute:
Supervise and collaborate with 3 full-time staff members and 2 contractors
Recruit, partner with, and guide 10-12 Faculty Fellows and 5 cross-cutting institutional initiatives annually
Support a diverse array of faculty-led projects focused on innovative approaches to teaching and learning; efforts include explorations of pedagogy, curriculum development, the use of new tools or research, and a variety of other initiatives
Manage operating budget and lead associated fundraising activities and stewardship efforts.
Work with the Dean of Studies, Dean of Faculty, the Chair of the Interdisciplinary Department, and other senior administrators to evaluate new and ongoing Institute projects, to identify where there may be opportunities for growth and continued development, and to operationalize, implement, and integrate the process and outcomes associated with the Institute.
In close collaboration with the Precourt Director of Partnerships, develop external partnerships to connect, share, and scale Institute initiatives and explore opportunities for new forms of partnership, impact, and reach with schools and other organizations
Collaborate closely with the Associate Director of Educational Initiatives and the Office of Information Technology team to support and expand our Online and Hybrid Teaching and Learning efforts.
Assessment: In collaboration with the Director of Institutional Research, continue to develop, refine, and apply evaluation efforts across a range of Institute projects and the Institute itself.
Communications: develop and share updates and information with the campus community and external partners and audiences; maintain website and up-to-date content.
Fundraising: Participate in efforts to garner financial and other forms of support for the Tang Institute; steward and engage the range of donors.
Experience within an educational enterprise, working directly with diverse faculty and students
Management experience, including incubating and cultivating early stage ideas, while also leading organizational growth and maturation
Project management experience, including examples of creative problem solving
Leadership and relationship-building skills which exhibit emotional intelligence and integrity, cultural and political sensitivity, enthusiasm and entrepreneurial thinking
Organizational and strategic planning experience; systems thinking skills
Experience in applying technology in thoughtful ways across a broad range of domains and relationships
Excellent communications skills, including speaking, writing, personal and digital networking
Appetite for innovation, outreach, and the scaling of good ideas
Master’s degree or comparable experience required, in addition to experience to budgeting and financial skills
