The Buckley School, Los Angeles’ oldest K-12 coeducational learning institution, has an opening for a Learning Specialist for the 2018-2019 school year. This position is responsible for assisting the School in meeting the needs of Lower School students by providing strategies and professional guidance to administrators, teachers, parents, and individuals.
Work in the classroom or one-on-one with students (teaching, editing of writing, assistance in math), especially those in need.
Work closely with Lower School administration to meet and address student needs.
Consult with parents by phone, meetings, or conferences regarding a student's needs/progress.
Arrange meetings with parents, teachers, administration, and outside professionals
Attend teacher meetings including grade level, full faculty and task force meetings, etc.
Participate in Child Study Team Meetings to discuss Lower School students.
Keep abreast of trends and new research in the field of education via a variety of avenues including attending conferences and seminars.
Document students’ needs/progress through notes and end-of-year reports.
Meet with the educational therapist, psychologist, health office personnel and other Lower School specialists to discuss needs/progress of students as needed.
Meet and communicate regularly with outside professionals who support Lower School students.
Administer informal assessments as appropriate to determine student learning styles.
Maintain detailed notes about students discussed at Child Study Team meetings to include plan of action and follow up steps.
Masters degree in a specialty area of reading and/or elementary education
Minimum of 5 years of early childhood and elementary teaching experience
Strong writing, editing, and spelling skills
Demonstrated competency in diversity, multiculturalism, inclusion, equity and social justice
Proficiency with classroom technology including but not limited to use of SMART Board and iPads
Preferred candidates will have:
Credential in reading or elementary education
Demonstrated leadership in diversity, multiculturalism, inclusion, equity and social justice
Demonstrated understanding of diverse learning styles and 21st century skills
Familiarity with writing workshop and reading workshop
Familiarity with Singapore Math and Math-in-Focus
