The Buckley School, a leading K-12 independent school in Sherman Oaks, CA is searching for a leading edge full-time 6-12 Assistant Librarian for the remainder of the 17-18 school year to assist the Head Librarian in the proper functioning of a full service school library. Duties include: opening and closing the library facility opposite the Head Librarian; assisting patrons; providing database instruction; collaborating with teachers; selecting, ordering, cataloging, processing, and circulating materials; maintaining print and online resources and access; monitoring student behavior and traffic during non-class hours; and maintaining an effective and orderly library environment. This position reports to the Heads of the Middle and Upper Schools.
The middle and upper school library is approximately 2000 square feet, serves approximately 90 faculty and 500+ Middle and Upper School students and is operational weekdays 10 hours a day on an academic school calendar. The facility has approximately 10,000 print volumes, around 50 print subscriptions, 25 online database subscriptions, and 20 laptops that students actively check out on a daily basis. Librarians participate in a local consortia of other independent school librarians which expose librarians and students to multiple facilities, resources, ideas and collaboration.
Among other duties the Assistant Librarian will
Help ensure an orderly and productive learning environment is maintained in the library.
Provide helpful research assistance to students, faculty and staff in a welcoming manner.
Alternate primary supervision of the facility.
Provide helpful circulation service.
Collaborate with the head librarian to enhance community awareness and use of library resources.
Assist in the evaluation and selection of new resources and materials.
Assist in processing new acquisitions as well as helping with the upkeep of current print collection.
Create effective displays that reflect school themes, world issues, and current events that bring awareness to the community.
Serve as an advisor to a group of 6-10 students.
This position also requires the ability to stand for extended periods during the workday. It also requires the ability to access library shelves to maintain books and other materials.
Bachelor’s degree is required. Either a Master’s of Library and Information Science (MLIS) or a Master’s of Library Science (MLS) and a California Library Media Services Teaching Credential are strongly preferred.
Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and good computer skills
Ability to connect with Middle and Upper School students
Ability to supervise students and enforce standards of behavior
Working knowledge of an online public access circulation system is preferred
