Albuquerque Academy, a co-ed, independent, college preparatory day school, seeks an English department chair for August 2018. Our mission is one of excellence, opportunity, caring, and inclusion. Department chairs at the Academy have broad duties and work in partnership with the three division heads and other administrators to support our students and faculty. The English department has 22 faculty members with an impressive range of teaching experience and academic credentials. Currently, the Academy offers required English courses at each grade level. The chair will have a teaching load of two classes and will be asked to promote and lead other school initiatives, in addition to the core responsibilities of supporting and mentoring faculty and ensuring that the curriculum addresses student needs within our mission priorities. Supportive personnel management is an important feature of this position, from instructional coaching to fostering collegiality and collaboration among faculty members. Albuquerque Academy has a diverse student body, with more than 50% students of color and 22% of students receiving financial assistance. Ensuring department faculty have the institutional support and guidance to be effective teachers and to maintain constructive relationships with students, families and other adult colleagues
Fostering a shared pedagogical and curricular vision within the department and an engaging and substantive curriculum, with appropriate vertical alignment that meets the school mission
Ensuring horizontal alignment of the curriculum at each grade level that leads to consistent development of student skills, while allowing for course content that follows the diverse passions and expertise of individual teachers
Teaching a course load of two classes and performing the typical divisional support duties of a full-time faculty member
Working with division heads to ensure faculty expectations and contributions to department and divisional goals are fair and equitable
Serving as an instructional coach; encouraging and supporting faculty professional development
Assigning course teaching loads appropriate to student needs and faculty strengths
Taking the lead in departmental faculty hiring, orientation, and mentoring of new teachers
Preparing and maintaining the annual department budget
Forestalling and resolving conflicts among faculty and between students/families and teachers, often in collaboration with the division head
Modeling and fostering the spirit of life-long learning, active engagement in support of the school’s mission and activities, and respect for all members of the school community
Continuing to develop professionally; soliciting, encouraging, and responding to feedback and suggestions about ways to strengthen the departmental, divisional, and school-wide programs and practices from faculty, administrators, and staff
