Within the framework of building strong relationships and setting high expectations, Isidore Newman School seeks an experienced and innovative educational leader with a growth mindset to assume the role of World Language Department Chair. The Chair will be responsible for leading & supporting a team of world language educators from pre-k through twelfth grades so that they are empowered to consistently deliver the best world language experience to students inside and outside of the classroom. This individual will work closely with the Associate Head of School, Division Heads, and Department Chairs to study, implement, and support best practices for students in target-language classrooms, a hallmark of the world language program at Newman.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Teaching up to four sections of a language
Coordinating and overseeing the development and implementation of the World Languages curricula
Supervising and evaluating, in collaboration with the division heads and Associate Head of School, world languages teachers to ensure the best learning environment for students
Supporting department members in the further development of their craft
Assisting the division heads in the hiring process
Maintaining a budget for supplies, curricular resources, subscriptions to professional organizations, et cetera.
Conducting placement interviews and testing for new to Newman students
Serving as a resource for teachers' professional development
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
Demonstrated excellence in teaching a world language (French, Spanish, Latin, or Chinese), preferably for 5 years or more
An advanced degree in a world language, in education, or educational leadership (or equivalent)
Evidence of positive professional relationships with parents, students, colleagues
Strong communication and organizational skills
Knowledge and understanding of ACTFL and CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) standards and the target-language pedagogical approach
Demonstrated commitment to, and success in, forming and maintaining collegial relationships in an educational setting
Demonstrated skills in team-based, collaborative projects and initiatives
