The Stony Brook School, an independent boarding school, is seeking a college counselor with extensive knowledge of the college admissions process. This position will begin in the summer of 2018. The ideal candidate will possess the enthusiasm, dedication, and vision to effectively guide both students and parents through the college application. The Stony Brook School believes strongly in the idea of fit, matching the needs of students with the college. Therefore, the college counselor must possess strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to not only assess the strengths of students, but also be able to see the potential in each student. The college counselor will work closely with the Director of College Counseling in enhancing the vision and mission of the college counseling department.
Qualified applicants must possess:
Excellent writing and speaking skills
Ability to communicate with students and parents about the college process
Emotional intelligence, energy, collegiality, a collaborative and empathetic spirit
Sensitivity to the needs of students and parents and the ability to be both supportive and candid through the college application process
A comprehensive understanding of the needs of both domestic and international, day and boarding students
3-5 years of college advising or college admissions experience is preferred.
Strong computer skills
Provide individualized college counseling to half of the junior and senior class
Write compelling and comprehensive letters of recommendation for each student
Help with editing and reviewing essays and college applications
Develop and maintain strong relationships with college admissions professionals
Stay current in the college admissions profession by visiting college, attending workshops, and participating in conferences
Coordinate and facilitate a number of school-wide events related to the college admissions process
Work collaboratively as a member of the college counseling team, including assisting the Director of College Counseling, the Academic Dean, and the Head of School on special projects or assignments
In addition to administrative responsibilities, faculty at The Stony Brook School are responsible for other duties as well, including and not limited to advising, dorm duty, coaching, and chaperoning.
