Full Time - Faculty
4 Year Degree
The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 700 students K-XII, seeks candidates for Lower School Room Teacher in Classes K-IV. Successful candidates will be co-teachers in Classes II-IV during 2018-2019. After our Lower School moves to a new building in the summer of 2019, we will add additional homerooms in those classes beginning 2019-2020 and we anticipate the co-teachers taking on their own homerooms at that time.
Founded in 1884, the school is a center of intellectual exuberance, attracting students from across and beyond New York City. Its mission has long combined outstanding academics with an insistence on larger purpose: we seek to prepare our students for principled engagement in the world.
Lower School Room Teachers are first and foremost responsible for the overall well-being of the child in school and play a vital role in the lives of our youngest students. They are responsible for establishing a foundation and creating an environment in which each girl feels and knows that she is a part of this community, capable of accomplishing all the tasks set before her. Helping each girl understand how she best learns is another critical facet of this position. Room teachers oversee the lives of their students from the moment the girls arrive at the homeroom until the last girl has been sent off at day’s end. They are alert to shifts of mood, behavior, work habits and friendships, and they are aware of the girls’ academic progress and their activities. They serve as mediators in situations the girls are unable to manage by themselves, and as experts on the child when speaking with parents.
Brearley teachers love to teach students who love to learn. They have the wisdom and skill to spark in students a pioneering spirit as well as the ability to think critically and creatively. We count on our faculty to create and maintain an atmosphere of honesty, generosity and genuine respect for the thoughts, efforts and feelings of others. Many are scholars, artists or athletes. We actively seek to build, nurture and sustain a diverse faculty and student body.
A Brearley education is rooted in ideas and practices that have been developed over time and through thoughtful, deliberate collaboration. We encourage new faculty to bring new ideas and fresh insights that might enhance a strong, beloved foundation.
The ideal candidate will have a genuine passion for and knowledge of elementary education; a sincere interest in young people and an appreciation for the variety of ways in which they grow and learn; excellent communications skills; fairness, consistency and promptness in evaluating student work and in responding to students’ individual progress; the desire to collaborate; a collegial spirit and a sense of humor; and a commitment to helping students think independently and develop confidence in their own abilities.
We seek college graduates with at least two years of experience in an elementary classroom.
The Brearley School is an equal employment opportunity employer committed to hiring exceptional, dedicated teachers of diverse backgrounds. We consider qualified individuals for employment with the School regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability or any other state or federal protected classification.
About The Brearley School
The Brearley School, an independent school for girls, was founded in 1884 to provide its students with a college-preparatory education equal in rigor to that of boys, and, in the words of the mission statement today, to prepare them for “active responsible citizenship in a democratic society.” Within a highly articulated 13-year curriculum, and with a 6:1 student-faculty ratio, teaching methods are varied, flexible and pragmatic, taking into account individual patterns of development and ways of learning. The School’s program is designed to challenge eager, able students intellectually, and to give each one the opportunity to gain competence, self-reliance and self-knowledge through academic achievement as well as experience in the visual and performing arts, sports, community service and a wide variety of extracurricular activities.
Brearley’s K-12 enrollment is divided into Lower School, Middle School and Upper School, and consists of about 690 students from throughout the New York metropolitan area who represent a diversity of backgrounds, experiences and points of view.
