The mission of SCS Noonan Scholars is to help high-achieving low-income students of color be admitted to selective colleges and graduate with the degree, experiences, and skills needed for the career of their choosing. We envision a world where the most selective higher education, civic, professional, and corporate settings properly reflect the diversity of this country, and our work strives to make that a reality.
SCS Noonan Scholars’ two-part, six-year-long program provides a continuum of support for our students that directly addresses the unique barriers they face to enrolling in and succeeding at selective colleges: their need for more informed college admissions advising; for stronger academic preparation; for professional mentors and experience; and for access to a network for key internships and jobs. Our Scholars benefit from admissions and intensive academic preparation before college and a comprehensive set of academic, personal, social-emotional, financial, and professional supports throughout college.
The two main components of our Access program are our Summer Academy and college advising. Summer Academy is a 6-week rigorous academic preparation program that gives students 210+ hours of instruction in college-level writing, math, and computer science taught by college professors. The Academy is housed at the University of Southern California and Amherst College and is designed to offset the discrepancy in academic preparation between many low-income students and those from more affluent high schools. Throughout Summer Academy and during their senior year of high school, SCS Noonan Scholars provides individualized college advising programming to students, ensuring that students are competitive applicants at selective colleges.
SCS Noonan Scholars is looking to recruit a dynamic, energetic, and experienced College Access Program Manager who will lead our efforts to select and prepare high school juniors and seniors for college. The College Access Program Manager will have two core responsibilities: lead our college guidance and admissions support for approximately 60 students and lead efforts to select SCS Noonan Scholars program participants.
The College Access Program Manager works closely with other members of the program team in Boston and LA, and reports to the Director of Programs. This position is based in Boston during the academic year and at Amherst College in Northampton, MA during the Summer Academy.
College Advising (75%): In leading the college advising program, the College Access Program Manager will have the opportunity to develop and implement college advising programming with a specific emphasis on selective college admissions for a cohort of approximately 60 students, half of whom will be from the Greater Boston area and the other half of whom will be from across the country. College advising programming includes planning and facilitating student workshops and webinars, leading campus visits, providing application feedback and support, providing financial aid support, writing letters of recommendation, and conducting individual in-person and virtual meetings with students and families.
The College Access Program Manager will be required to be in residence at Amherst College for the entirety of the 6-week program, as the core of the college advising programming takes place over the summer between Scholars’ junior and senior years of high school. During the school year, the College Access Program Manager will be responsible for effectively supporting students remotely through the college application process.
Student Recruitment and Selection (25%): The College Access Program Manager will work with the program team to recruit and select students. Student recruitment responsibilities include cultivating relationships with area schools and non-profits, coordinating and facilitating information sessions at schools and community-based organizations, and overseeing the student application and selection process.
