Teach Social Studies and related subjects to 7th & 8th Grade students. Our teacher will need to implement developmentally appropriate curriculum and instruction aligned to Common Core State Standards. Work collaboratively with teachers in other disciplines as well as the residential staff responsible for the Middle School students. Participate fully in the college academic and residential community. The position reports directly to the Elementary/Middle School Academic Dean and will begin September 2018.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provide instruction with a high degree of competence, adhering to high expectations within a child centered, standards based context by coordinating a curriculum where students learn how to read information and use critical thinking in research and projects.
Use assessment and evaluation tools to guide instructional decisions; maintain accurate, up-to-date records and communicate results in a timely manner with regard to student progress and performance.
Manage the classroom in a positive, enthusiastic, and professional manner.
Facilitate and maintain appropriate communication with students and Residential Faculty with regard to student progress.
Have significant competency in integrating technology into instruction.
Model and maintain appropriate student behavior.
Participate in all elementary/middle school events.
Participate in all professional development activities assigned by Girard College.
Become involved with and supportive of the College community at large, its Mission and Vision, for the benefit of student social, ethical and intellectual education.
Be persistent in attempting to identify and to put into practice effective methods or content which will support and enhance the curriculum and learning in general.
Conduct parent-teacher and student-lead conferences to promote constructive home-school communication.
Other responsibilities as assigned.
Bachelor’s Degree in an area of History/Social Studies, Master’s preferred
Instructional Certification Required, PA Instructional Certification in History/Social Studies Preferred.
Teaching experience at the middle school level, especially in a diverse setting.
Competency in world cultures, American History, Civics
Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
Proven ability to work collaboratively with all members of the community.
Experience/ability to integrate technology into instruction.
Consistently strong recommendations from previous employers and others.
Preferred - some competencies in a wide range of areas supportive of student learning e.g. coaching, club leadership, the arts.
Local candidates preferred as there is no relocation reimbursement available.
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
