Sierra Canyon is actively seeking a librarian for its brand-new (Winter, 2017) Lower Campus Library. Just as the space and structure are new, the candidate should possess the characteristics and skills to innovate and implement programs to ignite the students’ passion for reading and learning alongside fellow teachers. Working in concert with the Director of Studies and the Lower School Director, determine current as well as future needs and goals.
Candidates should also have strategies for and experience with the following:
• Promote a love of reading, learning, and information in all students. • Collaborate with classroom teachers and specialists to design and implement lessons, projects, and units of instruction that empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, skillful researchers, and ethical, capable, and savvy users of information.? • Participate actively in the life of the School, including leading clubs and/or activities, chaperoning school trips, and possibly coaching.? • Identify meaningful and thoughtful opportunities for library technology to be integrated into Pre-K – 6th grade curriculum. • Evaluate, promote, and use existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning. • Direct and manage library space and resources. • Preside over library outreach efforts, including visiting authors, book clubs, and partnerships with other libraries and agencies.?
Experience, and Characteristics include:
• Minimum of Bachelor’s degree; Master’s degree preferred. Strong candidates will possess an MLIS or similar degree/certification and experience in independent schools and/or libraries. • An understanding of the value of an independent private school education and the eagerness to learn about best practices to help young children, Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade, reach their full potential as learners and leaders? • Knowledge of current Children’s and Young Adult Literature • Familiarity with Balanced Literacy and Guided Reading and Writers Workshop • Experience with technology integration that supports teaching and learning as well as social media experience and digital citizenship • Candidates should also possess excellent communication skills, a genuine appreciation of the developmental stages of learning of the 4-12 year old, a sense of humor, and the ability to work well within a diverse, collaborative environment.
