The American Hebrew Academy is seeking qualified candidates for the following full-time position:
The ideal candidate will have a minimum of a four-year degree, either in English or Literature or in education, with a certification in English. S/he will have at least three years of demonstrated, highly effective high school teaching excellence. AP English Literature and Composition (and AP English Language and Composition) qualified candidates are strongly desired. A Master’s degree is preferred.
The candidate will serve as a full-time faculty member and academic advisor. The candidate should have a clear understanding of and sensitivity to cultural differences within international student populations and should be comfortable teaching the full range of courses offered at the Academy – from 9th grade English I through AP level coursework.
A high degree of proficiency and agility with technology, as well as specific competency with MS Office, Excel and Outlook, is strongly desired.
Serve as a full-time faculty member
Teach a full load of academic courses throughout the academic year
Develop lessons that are challenging and interesting to students, and that cover the full range of assigned curricula
Instruct with creativity and with sensitivity towards international students transitioning into regular English classes
Collaborate with colleagues in the department and throughout the faculty and staff
Be willing and able to teach a broad range of courses within the department, with a special emphasis on AP English Literature instruction
Fulfill additional duties required of faculty members, such as teaching electives, coaching, completing residential duty hours, serving on ad hoc committees, and committing to “all hands on deck” schoolwide event dates, etc.
Serve as an academic advisor
Meet daily with a small group of advisees
Guide, support, and mentor advisees towards a rich and fulfilling high school experience
Counsel advisees towards compliance with Academy policies, including graduation requirements
Act as an advocate for advisees in any issues that arise for them as Academy students
