As a Lead Teacher in the Upper School (grades 5-8), you are responsible for the curriculum and program within each grade level. In conjunction with the Division Director, review the scope and sequence of the science program Preschool through 8th Grade. Work with other faculty to create interdisciplinary units, sharing resources and developing unique and distinctive opportunities for the St. Peter’s students to find a love of science and gain the necessary skills to pursue science in secondary school and beyond.
While the primary responsibilities for this role are teaching science to grades 5-8, there are opportunities to be involved with STEM and Innovation throughout the school. Working with faculty and the STEAM Coordinator to bring STEM content into the classroom, developing partnerships, and showcasing the creative ability of all our students will also be pursued.
St. Peter’s is a Pre-School through Eighth Grade coeducational, non-denomination independent day school of 200 students. We are located in Historic Philadelphia and partner with local artists, innovators, and researchers to enhance our students’ experience.
As a classroom leader, model and encourage standards of best instructional practice, including the use of technology. Teach a full course load and participate fully in the community.
Provide academic leadership by fostering a department (PS to Grade 8) vision that supports the mission of the school
Work closely with the Division Director to develop and manage the department’s curriculum, including skills, content, and assessment, periodically review and revise course offerings and content; research, propose, and develop new courses and establish standards for, and oversee, curriculum
Oversee the participation of students in local an regional science competitions
Be attentive to students’ learning differences and coordinate with the Learning Support Team as needed
Manage the School’s “Underground” innovation lab and maker space. Upkeep of 3D printers, Verniers and other necessary technology for the students.
Perform other duties as assigned
Bachelors Degree in science or related field and a minimum of 5+ years experience teaching middle school. A master’s degree is preferred
Current knowledge of and practice in STEM related field. Interest in encouraging students to explore science related topics outside of the classroom through clubs, enrichment, afterschool options and curricular extensions
Ability to work as a member of a team
Excellent written and oral communication skills with the ability to interact with students of all ages, parents, and co-workers
