Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for an Upper School English Teacher, for the Fall Semester of the 2016-17 school year (beginning in mid to late August 2016).
The English Teacher position, reporting to the Upper School English Department Head, will join a highly collaborative department that consists of nine faculty members and offers a full range of courses in English, American, and world literatures. The Lakeside English Department uses grade-level curricula in the first three high school years. 9th and 10th grade courses cover a broad selection of world literature, and the 11th grade is dedicated to American Literature. In 11th grade, students choose either American Studies, which combines with a History course, or American Cultural Studies, which features a common core of texts in the fall, and themes and texts selected by individual instructors in the spring. The English Department’s numerous, wide-ranging, and multi-culturally oriented 12th-grade electives emphasize many different literary traditions and genres; they also include experiential, creative, and innovative courses, including some that are team-taught and interdisciplinary. Specific responsibilities for this position include:
Teaching 2 sections of classes in some combination of different grade levels. All courses emphasize the study of fiction, poetry, drama, and non-fiction, as well as the craft of writing in different modes. Classes study, discuss, and write about literary genres as expressions of various cultural and historical contexts. Class sizes are capped at 18 students, and most classes approach or reach that limit;
Providing academic support for students outside of class time (answering homework questions, providing extra help, etc.), as needed;
Collaborating and participating in the work of the English Department on innovative curriculum development, pedagogy, and assessment;
Attending department and faculty meetings as scheduled;
Co-advising a group of between 8 and 10 Upper School students;
Participating in the life of the school community.
Lakeside School is an Equal Opportunity Employer seeking to diversify its workplace.
