`Iolani School seeks a full-time Upper School Orchestra teacher for the 2018-2019 school year with extensive background in performance and teaching. The successful candidate should be able to teach our advanced Upper School orchestra (college-level), which includes working with the orchestra woodwinds/brass/percussion, middle school level orchestra, and/or Lower School beginner level orchestra classes.
The ‘Iolani Orchestra program includes 8 orchestras, a Suzuki program, and an extensive chamber music program. 'Iolani School is one of only two orchestras in the state to hold a yearly Concerto Concert, allowing students the chance to solo with orchestra. 'Iolani Orchestra has twice won the National Championship in the American String Teachers Association National Orchestra Competition (2010, 2013), and in 2017 won 2nd Place. It is the only orchestra from the state to win this national competition.
'Iolani's Orchestra was chosen by a very competitive national audition to perform at the 2017 Midwest Clinic International Conference. This was their second appearance at Midwest; their 2011 performance included the American premiere of Balzene Suite by contemporary Hungarian composer György Orbán and a performance of Pictures at an Exhibition as arranged by Brazillian composer Clarice Assad. The 'Iolani Orchestra is the only orchestra from Hawaii to have won this competition in the 70 years of this annual national competition. In addition to this, 'Iolani's Orchestra was also awarded the Live from Lincoln Center Award, a prestigious recognition for a high school group. In 2013 the Orchestra was invited to perform at the London Invitational Concert Series.
In January 2013, members of the Orchestra played for a unique event, celebrating the recent canonization of Mother Marianne Cope at Kalaupapa. This was an opportunity to come together with clergymen from around the world to celebrate the life of an amazing woman who combined common sense, persistence in the face of adversity, and the utmost altruism. Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, papal nuncio, was present, and having heard the group perform, he invited the 'Iolani orchestra to play at the Vatican in December 2016.
In addition to their participation in this orchestra, ‘Iolani students are also members of the Hawai‘i Youth Symphony, various chamber music ensembles, and the Hawai‘i Suzuki Strings. They participate in a wide variety of sports, and are also artists, debaters, scientists, writers, and community organizers.
Candidates should have 8-10 years of teaching experience. In addition to being active participants in our vibrant learning community, we are looking for educators who will inspire and support our students. The ideal candidate is dynamic, a strong communicator (both written and oral) and committed to professional growth in their discipline and teaching practice. An advanced degree in music, music education, or a related discipline is preferred.
