The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes), a Spanish immersion school in Austin, Texas, has an opening for a Primary School English Teacher. This position will work with our Primary School (K-5). The Primary School English Teacher is responsible for creating a progressive learning environment where students can demonstrate thoughtful and ethical behavior and ensure that the values and principles of the IB learner profile are at the heart of learning and relationships in the school.
Plan and teach English lessons following the IB curricula that differentiate for individual student needs and support students
Use a wide range of technologies and creative teaching styles
Regularly contribute to curriculum planning and development including interdisciplinary units of work and the development of transdisciplinary skills
Plan with colleagues to deliver effective team teaching when possible
Attend regular curriculum planning and student progress meetings
Communicate students' progress toward realizing academic character development goals
Essential Functions As It Relates To: Students
Promotes high standards and expectations for all students for academic performance and responsibility for behavior
Build upon students’ prior knowledge of grammar, vocabulary, word usage, and the mechanics of writing and usually include the four aspects of language use: reading, writing, speaking, and listening. May introduce and define various genres of literature, with writing exercises often linked to reading selections
Teaches acting principles and techniques to individuals or groups
Adapts course of study and training methods to meet student’s need and ability
Serves as a role model for students, dressing professionally, demonstrating the importance and relevance of learning, accepting responsibility, and demonstrating pride in the education profession
Ensures that the instructional programs engage the learner in tasks that require analytical and critical thinking, questioning the known, problem solving and creativity, that they address the range of skills and developmental needs found in the classroom
Encourages students to define individual goals
Maintains a safe and creative environment for their students
Contributes to team by working effectively with individuals with diverse backgrounds
Attends all staff/ faculty meetings
Meet with Primary Years Programme Coordinator to review curriculum plans and activities and evaluate program's effectiveness
Maintains records on each child's progress and development
Keep up-to-date records of attendance, curriculum, assessment tasks in Managebac
Carry out supervision at break times, lunch times, and other times as required
Prepare documentation for IB external assessment
Communicates professionally and effectively to parents about student progress
Works with Room Parent in planning and participating in parent activities
Conduct individual parent conferences at the end of each term
Establish a positive relationship with each student's family
Presents presentations to parents as needed
Attends parent meetings when required
Communicates and collaborates with parents of high needs students

Work Environment This job operates in a classroom environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines and requires lifting, bending, standing, and stooping.
Position Type and Expected Hours of Work Must be available to work Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (Some days will end at 4:00 p.m.) Some travel may be expected and weekend availability for events, though this is rare.
Travel Some out-of-area travel may be expected with field trips, but is not common.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.

Documents need to be presented no later than the third day of employment. Failure to do so will result in loss of employment at the school.

Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's Degree in English/ Literature or similar degree
Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary
A minimum of two years' experience teaching English
Experience in integrating IT with teaching
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of curriculum development and program evaluation, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment
Ability to create a stimulating classroom environment
Ability to utilize the local context and environment to enhance learning
Ability to work with parents
