Marlborough School, an independent, college preparatory school in Los Angeles for 530 young women in grades 7-12, seeks a dynamic Chinese instructor to join the faculty for the 2018-19 school year. An ideal instructor at Marlborough combines high expectations with a supportive, patient demeanor and is regularly available to help students (via office hours, free periods, email).
Marlborough’s Mission defines the School as “an independent, urban day school serving a diverse group of young women.” We believe a diverse, inclusive faculty is essential to this mission:
We build confidence and cultivate leadership potential within each student; effective teachers know a student’s interests and can adapt lessons to build upon those interests and foster a love of learning.
We teach each graduate the skills and motivation to create meaningful connections with people who are different from them; we want our students go to college excited to engage with the world beyond Marlborough.
We serve as role models for our students; we take pride in doing our jobs well. For us, this means being flexible, being helpful, revising curricula regularly to reflect what is relevant and necessary to know now, and adopting new tools for learning when they are useful to both students and teachers.
In the modern languages, the course sequence develops the four language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and includes relevant cultural, historical, and literary materials at all levels; we increasingly use material designed for native speakers rather than textbooks. Our students attain increasingly higher levels of proficiency as measured by the national standards set forth by the American Council of Teachers of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) and measured by the AAPPL exam. Students must also understand contemporary issues facing China, and how they compare and contrast to similar issues in Los Angeles and the United States. To better facilitate these goals, students should expect to use little or no English in class.
We are seeking a part-time Chinese instructor to join our World Languages Department beginning in August 2018 to teach AP Chinese Language. For information about Marlborough and its culture, visit our website at http://www.marlboroughschool.org.

The ideal candidate should possess, at minimum, a BA in Chinese and have at least 3−5 years teaching experience at the secondary level (grades 7-12). A candidate must have experience using Google Drive to organize course content.
