Brooks School is looking for a dynamic leader who can serve as the Head of the Art department. The Department Head is responsible for the oversight and operations of the Art department including working with the Academic Dean to schedule classes, assign instructors, prepare and manage annual budget and calendar for the department and oversee and mentor the art department staff.
Direction of the academic program
Lead the department in setting short and long term goals; establish and execute assessment efforts to promote continuous program improvement
Participate in hiring process. Work with Dean of Faculty and Human Resource Manager to screen and select candidates for interviews
Observe classes periodically, or as necessary, with departmental faculty
Support new faculty in department by assigning a mentor from within the Art Department
Encourage memberships in worthwhile professional affiliations outside of the School
Foster a departmental camaraderie and spirit of mission for the Arts to be a vital part of the Brooks community and students lives
Organize & run regular (usually monthly) department meetings and communicate to department members who are unable to attend
Oversight of Teaching and Advising
Responsible for teaching 3 sections of an art related class
Work in conjunction with the Academic Dean to schedule classes and assign instructors; Monitor course registration and make Adjustments in course schedules or teacher assignments as needed, and work with department. faculty to place students in correct levels
Oversee the department’s selection of curricular materials
Expedite the acquisition of:
Student and teacher editions of textbooks -- work with bookstore
Student supplies -- work with Arts dept. Production Manager
Teaching aids -- models, calculators, software, etc.
Teaching equipment -- computer hardware, overhead projectors etc.
Consumable teaching supplies
Work with the Director of the Library to recommend appropriate books and materials to support departmental program.
Other Administrative Responsibilities
Partner with Chief Financial Officer to develop annual departmental budget identifying both operating and capital expenses.
Partner with Dean of Students and Associate Head for Academic Affairs to develop annual departmental calendar for both curricular and co curricular presentations
Partner with the Director of Athletics to insure cohesion between curricular and co curricular offerings, and to make sure each program supports but does not duplicate the other.
Work collaboratively with the Director of Advancement and the Director of the Lehman Art Gallery in the programming and utilization of the Lehman Art Gallery.
Partner with the Academic Dean and Dean of Students to promote classes and activities within the Art department that appeal to a diverse student population.
Participateat the Head of School meetings to provide necessary representation for the Arts
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree in Arts preferred
Five or more years working in a boarding school environment
Prior experience as a working artist
Experience working with the full spectrum of Arts offerings including visual arts, theater, and music
Ability to develop curriculum that engages and excites students
Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build consensus
