The 4th grade is partially departmentalized at Burke’s. One teacher is responsible for language arts (reading, writing, word study, handwriting and keyboarding) and the other teaches mathematics and social studies. The Lower School at Burke’s generally follows Lucy Calkins Readers and Writers Workshop units of study.
We are looking for an experienced teacher who creates a classroom culture that supports deep thinking and learning. An ideal candidate would be dynamic, interested in learning and growing as a professional, willing and able to collaborate with colleagues, and experienced in best practices.
Burke’s has a Teaching Institute and each K-4 teacher is responsible for mentoring an Associate Teacher.
Working in partnership with the Associate Teacher to plan and teach
Planning trips and special projects to support the program
Creating a warm, nurturing and inclusive classroom environment through regular class meetings, supportive exchanges with students and clear expectations for community behavior using techniques from Responsive Classroom and Toolbox
Partnering and communicating proactively and effectively with parents in formal and informal conferences, written reports twice a year, regular blog postings, email, and phone communication
Developing curricula using a backward design approach, incorporating effective strategies for differentiation and assessment
Collaborating with social studies teacher on interdisciplinary units involving language arts and social studies
Collaborating with K-2 Learning Specialist, K-4 Counselor, Director of Inclusivity and Community Building, and Division Director around student needs and issues that arise
Being a positive and contributing member of the professional community at Burke’s

B.A degree and teaching credential or advanced degree
