Columbus School for Girls seeks to hire an enthusiastic and collaborative part-timeCollege Counselor to begin in the 2018-2019 academic year. Major Functions and Responsibilities:
The ideal candidate will join a team of colleagues who are energetic, creative and collaborative. The candidate will be expected to support students annually through the college search and application process; to help keep the team abreast of trends and issues in the field; and to present to students and families on the college application and selection process and on the landscape of highly selective college admissions.
The college counselor will:
Counsel, support, and mentor a diverse group of students and families through the college selection and application process each year, including building college lists, writing individualized recommendations for each counselee, and providing feedback to students on their college essays (caseload will be adjusted according to the class size)
Present to students, families, teachers, and advisors about current trends, match, and fit in the college search and application process
Teach College Counseling junior year course about the basics of the college search and admissions process
Visit and expand CSG’s network with colleges and universities to learn about options for students and to further educate these institutions about CSG
Provide guidance to students and families applying for need-based financial aid
Experience, Characteristics, Qualities:
Bachelor’s degree is required
Successful candidates will have three or more years of relevant experience in either selective college admissions or college counseling.
Excellent skills in listening, counseling, verbal and written communication, public speaking, creativity, and technology.
An understanding of the value of an all-girls education and the eagerness to learn about the best ways to help young women of promise reach their full potential as learners and leaders.
A demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion, and have experience working with a diverse student population.
Strong organizational and time management skills
Successful candidates must be able to work occasional evenings and weekends to support college counseling programs, to write recommendations and to travel to colleges.
