Punahou School is actively recruiting a Technical Theatre Director to join the Theatre team! The Technical Theatre Director will be responsible for supporting all major school productions by teaching, training, coaching, and if necessary, recruiting a qualified crew of students in support of all Academy theatre productions such as Variety Show and other theatre and musical offerings, triennial productions (Academy, Junior School and Dance), Junior School Theatre, all school choral, band and orchestra productions. The Technical Theatre Director will serve as an integral member of the production and educational team. The ideal candidate will actively lead and manage the pre- through post-production technical project phases as assigned, including supervising strike to ensure orderly and safe tear down, demolition, and/or storage of scenic, lighting, sound, and property elements, communicating frequently and effectively with all stakeholders. They will orient facility renters and visiting productions to safety, technical characteristics and other areas of facility operations; facilitates the use of the technical facilities by end users. The ideal candidate will create a positive, supportive and learning environment, and will be flexible and open-minded with respect to learning styles. They will contribute to a culture among colleagues that models collaboration, continuous learning, reflective practice, peer support, and the ability to contribute to the intellectual and cultural life of the School.
Position Details: Department: Theatre Status: Full Time Regular FLSA Status: Exempt Work Year: 10.5 Months Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 7:30AM – 4:00PM. Schedule may vary depending on theatrical rehearsals and/or performances.
Bachelor’s Degree in Technical Theatre or related field, MFA in Theatre preferred, or equivalent professional experience.
Three (3) years of proven experience in the theatrical set design and construction.
Two (2) years of experience in a supervisory capacity.
Prior experience working with middle school and high school students.
Contemporary knowledge of construction and set design, lighting design, stage rigging, audio and sound reinforcement, stage management or production management, professional standards of stage safety, current technical theatre trends and technological innovations.
Theatrical systems technology, such as LED, moving light and intelligent light operation.
Computer-Assisted Design Software
Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills and the ability to establish collegial relationships with faculty and staff.
Familiarity with the mission, goals and objectives of an independent school environment.
