Green Mountain Valley School, a world-class ski academy located in Vermont's Mad River Valley, is seeking a dynamic, energetic, team-oriented Director of Student Life. GMVS's unique program produces the finest ski racers in the country while preparing them for studies at the most competitive colleges and universities by fostering a life-long love of learning, sport and adventure.
The Director of Student Life is responsible for overseeing all student life programming while ensuring that students have the opportunity to experience the world beyond GMVS, and to contribute to the community beyond the classroom or on-snow environments. The Director of Student Life manages and directs all components of the student life experience including the school’s health and wellness curriculum, residential life, student leadership, community service, student activities, counseling, discipline, advisory, and other activities related to a student’s enrollment at GMVS.
The Director of Student Life, supported by a Student Life Team, plays an integral role in the administrative team, reports directly to the Head of School, and receives additional support and supervision from the Assistant Head of School.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following:
Develop and implement a comprehensive, integrated, and robust health and wellness curriculum
Work with the Administrative Team to develop and manage academic and social policies, protocols, and practices that serve to support student development, learning, health, and safety
Support and coordinate student growth and development through advising, wellness, and counseling systems
Oversee the Residential Life program, including management of the residential life staff and the OOD program
Oversee student government activities (currently the Community Leadership Council), the community service program, and conduct a class in student leadership
Oversee student conduct and maintain student discipline as well as follow-through with record keeping related to discipline
Supervise and coordinate student support services
Manage various services related to a student’s enrollment including organizing transportation for doctors’ appointments, therapist appointments, travel and other needs.
Provide health services at a basic level for sick students in the dorm
Manage the school’s assembly program
Manage the advisor/advisee program
Support student activities including those offered on the weekends, as well as schoolwide special events like adventure weekends and orientation
Provide timely and relevant updates to parents of students who are experiencing problems
Develop and implement strategies to help empower students and improve executive functioning, self-advocacy, independent living and social skills
Support the philosophy of an intentional community on campus and work to build a positive, inclusive culture on campus
Be a role model for students, mediate conflicts as necessary and transmit a positive attitude towards academic and athletic success
Be on call for after-hours emergencies and student life issues
Communicate effectively with staff to provide updates on student life curriculum, discipline issues, other related student life activities, and student of concern
Participate in the co-curricular activities of the school
Report residential maintenance problems in a timely manner to the Director of Facilities
Must be able to work with various constituencies in a fast-paced environment
Dynamic enthusiasm, energy and the ability to work long hours in a boarding school setting
Prior student life experience in a college or boarding school environment preferred
Excellent communication and organizational skills
The ability to work collaboratively with other staff
