Pace Academy, one of the Southeast’s top independent day schools, seeks an energetic, organized and enthusiastic individual to join the Upper School faculty as a Computer Science and Robotics teacher. This teacher will pick up some current classes and will be involved in the development of future advanced courses offered at the school.
Responsibilities include teaching introductory courses in Robotics and Programming, an advanced placement course, AP Computer Science Principles, and a new applied computer science course – curriculum to be determined. In addition, the teacher will coach robotics (FIRST Tech Challenge) alongside current faculty coaches in the fall.
Other responsibilities include communications with the Robotics Team parents, coordination of robotics events (both internal and external), developing curriculum for current and future STEAM classes, collaboration with the Science Department with technical projects, and aiding students in finding internships and summer programs.
The ideal candidate will possess a passion for teaching computer science and technology, and be able to demonstrate in their work history the ability to motivate and excite youth in learning the fundamentals of computing. The ability to implement existing curricula and activities, and aid in the development of new curricula is required.
Upper School Job Duties/Responsibilities Include:
Intro to Robotics
Intro to Programming
AP Computer Science Principles- 1 week college board training over the summer provided
Computer Science Applications -Curriculum to be determined
Robotics - Work with current coaches in the Fall
Miscellaneous 1. Help coordinate and communicate with Robotics Team Parents 2. Coordinate robotics events internally and with outside groups (e.g. FIRST Tech Challenge Robotics events) 3. Attend Saturday robotics events (3-4 in the fall, 1-3 in the spring) 4. Work with teachers to develop and improve curriculum for current and future STEAM classes 5. Collaborate with Science Department to aid with technical projects 6. Aid students in finding internships or summer programs
The Computer Science offerings in the Upper School at Pace currently include the following classes:
Intro to Programming (Semester- Fall & Spring) Covers basic programming fundamentals, basic web design, and an introduction to Arduinos
Intro to Robotics (Semester- Spring Only)
Part 1: Utilizes Lego EV3 Robots to teach basic programming (ROBOTC) and problem solving Part 2: Utilizes MATRIX Robots to teach basic building skills and programming using FIRST’s robot control system with Andriod Studio (Java)
Robotics I/II/III (Semester- Fall Only) Competes in the FIRST Tech Challenge Utilizes class time to work as a team to solve the challenge
AP Computer Science A (Year-Long) Follows the curriculum outlined by the college board Covers Object Oriented Programming fundamentals, Arrays, Lists, Recursion, Searching/Sorting
Data Structures & Algorithms (Post-AP) (Year-Long) Covers Linked Lists, Trees, Hash Tables, Graph Theory Culminates in a large independent project
Working with current and new faculty, the course offerings will grow to include: 1. Robotics I/II/III as a year long class 2. AP Computer Science Principles 3. Computer Science Applications. (Curriculum TBD: likely web development, app development, 3D modeling, or IoT)
Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field; Bachelors minimum, Masters Preferred
Experience in a technology related field
Experience with robotics or a willingness to learn
Excellent communication and collaboration skills
Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for robotics events
