Castilleja seeks to hire an enthusiastic and experienced Upper School English Teacher. The ideal candidate will possess a minimum of three years prior classroom experience, demonstrate proficiency with technology in and out of the classroom, and bring an understanding of adolescent girls and adolescent issues to his/her teaching. A Bachelor's degree is required and an advanced degree is highly preferred.
The English Department offers an innovative, inclusive, and diverse curriculum to prepare our students for lifelong excellence in writing and love of literature. The US English teacher reports to the English Department Head and works closely with other English teachers, with the grade level team, and collaborates with grade level colleagues. The US English teacher is responsible for planning, developing, and teaching units of study, following an existing curriculum and departmental policies. The teacher will also collaborate with grade level colleagues to craft interdisciplinary student experiences.

Plans and implements department curriculum
Understands sequential progression and scope and sequence in subject area
Incorporates appropriate and varied methods, materials, and technologies into teaching
Continues professional development in both subject matter and methods of teaching
Gives timely, meaningful, and personal feedback on student performance and participation
Utilizes challenging, thoughtful, fair, and varied tools appropriate to the objectives of the course for assessing student progress and evaluating student achievement
Holds high expectations for all students and communicates these clearly and regularly
Treats students equitably, is interested in them as individuals, and responds to their needs
Responds to evaluations from supervisors and students professionally and constructively
Actively engages in the life of the school in roles such as student advisor, elective teacher, club mentor, and advocates for the school in the broader community
Creates a safe and inclusive classroom environment
Maintains a culture of care and respect for a diversity of opinions; inspires students to be risk-takers and collaborators who are enthusiastic about learning
Understands and is compassionate to adolescent realities, especially those related to girls
B.A. or B.S. in English; Graduate degree preferred
Prior teaching experience is required
Ability to pass state and federal background check, fingerprinting, and provide a recent negative TB test or screening.
