The Harley School seeks a full-time elementary music teacher for the 2018-19 school year. The primary responsibility for the position is teaching music and movement to K-4th grade students. The Lower School music teacher will have a strong pedagogical approach to teaching music and creative expression, as well as work closely with the classroom teachers and other specialists to integrate content areas, as appropriate. In addition to working with the Lower School faculty, the music teacher will also work closely with all members of the music department, the department chair, and Lower School division head.
Essential duties and responsibilities:
Teach K-4th Grade music classes
Assist as needed with weekly Lower School Assemblies
Contribute to the musical life of the school
Fulfill duties which support the Lower School (bus duty, faculty meetings, open houses)
Provide written student-progress reports to the school and parents at regular intervals
Aid in the creation and production of the annual Pageant
Be involved in the school community at large.
Bachelor’s degree in Music Education (or related field); graduate degree preferred
Knowledge of and experience with various pedagogical approaches to teaching music and creative expression (e.g., Dalcroze, Kodály, MLT, Orff, etc.)
Strong piano proficiency
Commitment to process over product
Respect and appreciation that all children are musical
Comfort with diverse musical repertoire, as well as arranging and improvisation
Excellent written and oral communication skills
3+ years of teaching experience
Enthusiastic about collaborative learning; creative and innovative when working with diverse learners and faculty.
