Buffalo Seminary is an independent day and boarding high school for college-bound girls. Founded in 1851, SEM is located in the historic Elmwood Village neighborhood of Buffalo, New York and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. Our five student and faculty residences are renovated historic homes adjacent to our school building. Reporting to the Assistant Head for Community Life and in collaboration with the health and wellness team, the School Nurse is responsible for the overall health and well-being of the SEM community. Partnering with families, faculty, school administrators, and other professionals, the School Nurse will provide support with preventive health services that facilitate the student's optimal physical, mental, emotional and social growth, and development.
The ideal candidate will be a team-oriented, adaptable and dedicated individual who is able to maintain confidentiality and provide keen customer service, inclusive of establishing and maintaining effective communication, both orally and in writing, with school administrators, faculty, parents, and students.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
-Serves as a medical resource and health advocate for students and staff.
-Administers basic health care and First Aid for the purpose of providing appropriate care for ill and/or injured students.
-Dispensing medications to students when needed with the written permission of parent and physician.
-Maintaining health records, i.e. assuring that physical exams are updated annually and that all forms regarding dispensing of medications, prescription or over-the-counter, are complete.
-Proactively educating the school community on relevant health issues.
-Oversees all aspects and components of the Nurse's office and other emergency/medical equipment for school use.
-Working with parents and staff to interpret and establish health care plans for students with special health concerns.
-Educates families through written communication and verbal contacts to encourage follow-through of health care referrals.
-Planning for off-site activities, i.e. providing medications and emergency information for class trips, overnight activities, and the residential program.
-Works with others in the school's administrative team to implement and update the school's Emergency/Crisis Response Plans.
-Monitors compliance with current state immunization and health assessment requirements in auditing student records, compiling information and submitting reports to the New York State Department of Health on topics of vaccination, prevalence of asthma & diabetes, and screening results.
-Performs other duties as assigned.
-Current New York State RN License.
-Current certification in CPR.
-BSN nursing degree from accredited college or university.
-One to three years of recent nursing experience in a school setting is preferred.
