The Elizabeth Mandel Music Institute (EMMI) is a competitive audition-based music program, which focuses on the further development of string musicians and classical pianists. Students in this major are required to fulfill all course work towards graduation requirements, as well as coursework in music theory, orchestra, chamber ensemble and/or keyboarding. In turn, the expectation is that EMMI students will take private music lessons. More so, the students perform and participate in various youth orchestras and professional performances.
The program has an Assistant Conductor Internship that lasts for three school years is looking for an Assistant Conductor who will work directly with EMMI Chamber Orchestra Conductor, Alexander Treger. The Assistant Conductor is a member of the Elizabeth Mandell Music Institute at Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences. He/She is expected to work closely and effectively with the Orchestra Conductor, EMMI Director, and Arts Administrator to ensure clear communication regarding artistic needs for orchestral performances.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary roles of the Assistant Conductor are as follows:
Conduct up to three concerts: a holiday concert and two chamber orchestra concerts.
Assist in programming for the concerts.
Serve as cover conductor for all concerts.
Be present at all rehearsals and assist with balances and other matters that may arise.
Check attendance and grade students.
Assist with outreach events.
Additionally, the Assistant Conductor is required to attend department meetings, assist in communication of the Orchestra Conductor’s needs, and work with the Arts Administrator on fulfilling the artistic requirements for any concert. Other tasks may include reviewing orchestra seating and personnel needs with the Orchestra Conductor and working with the Arts Administrator and Facilities to review stage set-up preferences.
Bachelor in Music required. Master in Music or Doctorate in Musical Arts preferred.
Conducting experience and preferably is a strings musician (Violin, Viola, Cello or Bass).
Must be able to handle organizational and communication aspects of the position in a professional and timely manner.
Works well under pressure.
Must be flexible and willing to be available to help, maintaining patience and a positive attitude.
