The Crossroads Upper School Community Service Program is designed to instill in students a lifelong pattern of giving, by helping them to develop a connection with the larger society. At this age, community service is a door to the world, and we encourage and support students to do their community service in areas that reflect their passions--and in ways that leave them changed as much as those they serve. The intention of the department is to empower and help shape our students into leaders and activists.
Service is an integral part of the life of the school. Besides having community awareness, service and service leadership classes for each grade, student clubs and activities reflect the Crossroads community commitment to service, making a connection to local and global communities and bringing awareness of equity and social justice issues to the forefront. Besides having specific classes, time is allocated for activities, assemblies and clubs. Reflection is a key component of meaningful experiential education, we build this in to the service process. Through discussion and reflection projects, we invite students to consider the learning they’ve experienced.
