Isidore Newman School seeks a mathematics coach to work with teachers in grades Pre-K to 5. The mathematics coach will be a resource for administrators and teachers to continue to strengthen the curriculum and improve instruction. The coach will lead ongoing professional development. The mathematics coach will provide support, guidance, and feedback to teachers and students through individual, small group, and large group training, informed by regular classroom observations and discussions. The ideal candidate will be well versed in all aspects of Singapore Math in the use of instructional strategies, management techniques, and assessment. The coach will facilitate staff planning meetings for grade levels as they work to implement and improve mathematics instruction. The coach will help teachers interpret assessment data and use that information to inform instruction and provide ongoing feedback. Qualified applicants will have strong interpersonal skills, a background that includes teacher development, adult management experience and be passionate and knowledgeable about all aspects of excellent elementary mathematics instruction.
Knowledge and Use of Mathematics Expertise
Demonstrates an understanding of best practice in the areas of elementary math instruction in order to support students and teachers more effectively, specifically with:
Lesson planning and instruction (developing strong conceptual understanding through the concrete-pictorial-abstract learning progression)
Small Group Instruction (differentiation including enrichment and remediation oral language, shared reading, read to, strategy lessons, interactive writing, shared writing, visual understanding, connections, number sense, mastery, and word problems)
Maintain a collection of professional reading materials which reflect current research.
Promotes an environment of mathematics conducive to effective instruction by:
Establishing rapport and maintaining constructive interaction with teachers and grade level teams
Maintaining open communication with the administration
Advocating for the philosophies and programs currently used at Isidore Newman including Mathematics
Supporting the Newman mission and vision through positive professionalism
Planning Assistance for Instruction
Works directly with teachers as a peer-coach to ensure that the most current, research-based mathematics methodologies are being applied in the classroom by:
Supporting the use of assessment data to guide instruction. Help teachers to develop plans according to student needs.
Supporting teachers as advisors/consultants as needed
Peer-conferencing with teachers when needed to determine the degree of understanding of new concepts being implemented, set mathematics related goals, or to plan for or reflect upon a specific lesson
Co-planning lessons and activities with teachers
Co-teaching and model 'best practice' instructional strategies
Providing necessary bridging between curriculum, instruction and assessment as needed
Provides staff development by:
Assessing skill levels of teachers to determine professional development needs.
Sharing in the planning process for staff development
Offering workshops and study groups as needed to provide modeling and/or time for teachers to share in focused mathematics dialogue
Related Professional Responsibilities
Facilitate the effective use and determine needs of the guided reading library and work closely with the school librarian to ensure our school library represents our mathematics approach
Works collaboratively with the administration to monitor, and/or review the direction of the initiatives and participate in curriculum decisions
Communicates the philosophy of mathematics instruction to the community
Attend weekly mathematics meetings
Attend team meetings
Monitor and evaluate the outcomes of the teacher support provided
