BDS Upper School Lead Teacher

Bennett Day School is seeking two dynamic, experienced leaders to be our first lead teachers as we open a new Upper School in 2019. These teachers will be part of a team responsible for the creation and implementation of the Upper School program. During the 2018-2019 school year, upper school teachers will work as consultants, receiving a monthly stipend. These two teachers will be expected to mentor new colleagues as we hire additional teachers in the first several years of the upper school.
Job Specifications (2018-2019) (Part-Time, Approximately 10 Hours/Week)
Attend (along with other Bennett Day Faculty) the Project Wayfinder Summer Institute, June 28-July 1 at Stanford
Meet regularly with the Director of Upper School to design our competency-based learning program
Participate in the admissions process, including evening and weekend admissions and outreach events and application reviews
Design essential elements of the school, including a competency map, a student learning library complete with digital, analog and human resources, a schedule and school calendar.
Participate in interviews and hiring decisions for any additional Upper School faculty members
Job Specifications (2019-2020)
Advise, and work in collaboration with, the Director of Upper School in making critical programmatic and strategic decisions about the Upper School
Teach and advise a cohort of new Bennett Day Upper School Students
Individual student documentation and evaluation, including digital portfolios and narrative assessments.
Family communication: home visits, conferences, open house, weekly newsletters/blogging
Monday afternoon faculty meetings and Wednesday afternoon professional development
Participation in a self-evaluation and reflection process
Participation in family/community evening events
5+ years experience working with adolescents in an education setting
Recognition that your primary role is an advisor and that your content expertise is secondary to the position
Desire to rethink and redesign what it means to be a teacher in modern education
Demonstrated success in designing project-based learning and competency-based learning programs
Interdisciplinary teaching experience
Interest in/Experience working in teams, especially design teams
Successful experience working as a mentor/advisor to an adolescent within an academic setting
Interest in/Experience designing innovative and experimental curriculum in a collaborative setting
Commitment to continual development of one’s cultural competence
Commitment to ongoing professional development
Strongly Preferred Qualifications
Comfort in a startup culture
Experience or education in, or professional passion for, multiple content areas across traditional silos
Experience designing online learning experiences
A minimal fluency in Spanish
Interest in the Science of the Adolescent Brain/Learning Science
Working knowledge of the field of design in education, especially design and systems thinking
