Ojai Valley School is a pre-kindergarten to grade 12 boarding and day school located on two campuses in Ojai, California. The Lower Campus serves students in grades PK-8 and the Upper Campus serves students in grades 9-12.
Summary of Position
Ojai Valley School, Lower Campus is looking for a well-qualified candidate to serve as a part time Elementary Spanish teacher for the 2018-2019 academic year. The Spanish teacher, under the supervision of the Head of School – Lower Campus, is responsible for the day-to-day management and instruction of students in his or her charge. He or she, among other duties, manages his or her respective grade level and course(s) within an assigned classroom.

Spanish Teacher Job Summary
A part time Lower Campus teacher is typically responsible for teaching 15-20 class periods. The classes could be in one grade level, one discipline, or across grade levels and in more than one discipline depending on the needs of the school. In addition to daily responsibilities, teachers are expected to participate in, and lead, activities that include but are not limited to extra-curricular, experiential, and community service learning across grade levels. Most staff members participate in overnight retreats and trips with students at different times during the year.
The ideal candidate will have a strong Spanish background, the ability to teach PK-8 Spanish levels, use a wide variety of teaching approaches, the desire to teach students who work at the regular level of academic abilities as well as those passionate about the language and culture, and will be excited about helping students learn through discovery and exploration. The candidate must demonstrate proficiency with new technology and a willingness to integrate technology into classroom lessons. The ideal candidate will also have demonstrated use of a variety of teaching methods to support different learning styles and have experience teaching the whole spectrum of students. The candidate should be excited to help students build self-confidence. Prior teaching experience is preferable.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities of Elementary Spanish Teacher:
Leads children, by example and otherwise, adhering to the guidelines of the school Course of Study and Faculty Training Manual.
Organizes the methodology of respective courses to satisfy individual needs and preparation for the following grade level.
Communicates with the administration, parents, and dorm parents regarding student progress on a regular basis, including student review and weekly reports.
Maintains a warm and positive environment in the classroom, while establishing and managing classroom rules and regulations.
Cares for and protects the safety of the students and is versed in emergency and disaster procedures.
Prepares course objectives and outlines for the Course of Study following curriculum guidelines, satisfying state and local requirements.
Checks dress and homework.
Lectures, demonstrates, and uses audiovisual teaching aids to present subject matter to class.
Prepares, administers, and corrects tests and records results. Prepares grades and comments quarterly.
Assigns lessons, corrects papers, and hears oral presentations.
Takes roll and promptly reports attendance.
Accompanies classes to special events and school functions.
Displays students’ work around the school and in publications.
Teaches rules of conduct.
Maintains order and discipline in the classroom.
Counsels students and reviews grades on a continual basis.
Coordinates and contributes to class field trips.
Contributes to Family Tree and/or other publications.
Gives instructions to children regarding desirable health and personal habits.
Provides pre and after-school tutoring for students in need.
Work is performed largely independently, in consultation with the foreign language department, grade level team, Dean of Studies, and Head of School. There is considerable autonomy in designing courses, choosing materials and running classrooms.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) from four-year college or university preferred; previous teaching experience required.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret safety rules and technical journals. Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from parents, regulatory agencies, or members of the community. Ability to effectively present information to management, and parents.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to calculate grades and posses basic skills to work with budgets.
Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
California driver's license preferred.
Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
California Teaching Credential preferred.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to use training and experience to teach children of all ages.
Enthusiasm, sense of humor, patience and self-control.
Good character, integrity and adaptability
Ability to supervise children of all ages.
Ability to relate to one’s peers.
