CATS Academy, a 9-12 boarding school in Braintree serving predominantly international students, seeks an English Department Chair to start in August 2018. The English department chair will steer the department’s teachers in support of the school’s mission to provide all students the academic instruction and support they need to build the linguistic, critical thinking, reading, and writing skills that they need to gain admission to and success in American colleges and universities. The department chair’s key roles and duties include: teaching 4 sections of English, serving as an advisor for a small group of students, participating in the school’s extracurricular activities program, coordinating the curriculum for all classes in the English department, building relationships with and among teachers in the department, supporting and evaluating teachers, encouraging student-centered pedagogy, overseeing the departmental budget, placing students into appropriate classes, modeling strong teaching practices and professional growth, and working with administration in the hiring new teachers, as necessary. Serving as a houseparent in one of our dormitories may be a part of this position.
The ideal candidate will have at least 5 years of teaching and leadership experience and a graduate degree in English, as well as experience teaching international students and English language learners
