Reports to: Assistant Head of Lower School and Lead teacher
Position Purpose: Assists the Kindergarten Lead Teacher in instructing, guiding and directing the activities of students in a well-organized and smoothly functioning classroom environment. Assists school administrators and staff with various administrative functions as requested.
Responsibilities to the General Community:
To assist students with exercises and class activities, concentrating efforts with small groups of students and individuals as necessary
To assist individual students with special needs and/or in need of special attention
To compile, prepare and organize materials and classroom for instruction and activities
To assist in cleaning and storing of materials after completion of activities
To reinforce all knowledge and skills taught by the Lead teacher
To model proper behavior and play
To prepare daily snacks for students
To assist teachers by recording attendance and monitoring student work
To communicate any and all parent requests to the Lead teacher in a timely manner
To refer all parent concerns and queries to the Lead teacher related to student performance and or behavior. Assistant may attend parent conference or share observations with parents with the knowledge and consent of the Lead teacher either during formal conference time or at any given time
To interact with various individuals such as teachers, administrators, staff, parent volunteers, etc.
To substitute as the Lead teacher as needed
To escort students to other areas on campus, monitoring student behavior, checking student take home materials/folders and running errands as deemed necessary by the Lead teacher
To supervise and assist students during drop-off and pick-up, in the halls, on field trips, during classroom work time, lunch and on school grounds
To coordinate and/or participate in special programs or projects as assigned
To attend staff meetings and participate in in-service trainings as required
To receive and respond to inquiries and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility
To keep abreast of state standards of education in curriculum and instruction
To attend trainings, workshops, etc. as appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills
To perform routine clerical tasks as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and records, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, preparing notices and mail, etc.
To perform related duties as required
To be responsible for the care and maintenance of an orderly environment and clean classroom materials
To be responsible with the Lead teacher for the safety and physical well-being of the students at all times
Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
To have a good working knowledge of a variety of equipment such as computer, printer, copier, laminating machine, computer supplies, instructional supplies and materials, etc.
To effectively communicate information which includes receiving assignments and/or directions from supervisors and giving instruction and/or assignments to students
Bachelor’s Degree in Education and teacher certification preferred
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
Works in a highly stressful environment dealing with a wide variety of challenges, deadlines and a varied and diverse array of contacts
Occasionally bend, stoop and squat
May work at a desk and computer for extended periods of time
Be able to occasionally lift up to 30 lbs.
Work primarily in a traditional climate controlled environment
Work intermittently in outside weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold
