Winchester Thurston School, a nationally recognized and innovative Pre-K through grade 12 independent day school in Pittsburgh, seeks an experienced Middle and Upper School Counselor. The Middle and Upper School Counselor provides leadership and professional expertise in promoting and enhancing a positive experience for students in grades 6 – 12. The individual in this position provides support in a manner that advances and upholds the mission and philosophy of WT. The School Counselor will engage in a team approach with colleagues, students and parents to both lead and manage student wellness programs. He/she will respond to identified personal, social and emotional needs of students, manage crisis situations, and will work with the Director of Support Services to establish and implement educational interventions.
The Middle and Upper School Counselor is responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:
Develops and implements wellness programs to foster an environment in which all students may flourish
Serves as a trusted counselor and provides guidance and resources for students and families in the areas of social, emotional, and mental health issues
Consults with the Director of Support Services and other administrators and faculty regarding student problems or concerns, as needed or requested
Provides crisis assessment and management for students in grades 6 – 12, and to the school community, as needed
Establishes and manages programs related to suicide prevention, wellness, personal safety, student support groups, the Talk sex education program, and other identified issues
Provides short-term individual and group counseling to students with identified needs and concerns
Collaborates with and makes referrals to appropriate community support providers/resources for students and families
Develops programming, in conjunction with Middle School Directors, to assist Middle School students with learning how to resolve conflict and navigate social dynamics
Conceives and facilities educational programs for parents and faculty related to child development , behavior management, and social, emotional, and mental well-being
Maintains careful records in accordance with professional standards
Engages in professional growth activities through continuing education and reviewing current research and literature
Performs other duties as assigned
Master’s degree in a related field
3-5 years of experience working with a diversity of adolescents and teenagers
Strong knowledge of student mental health issues and child development
Experience in managing a wide variety of difficult and confidential situations
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively in group and one-on-one settings
Demonstrated experience in planning and facilitating programs and collaborating with students, parents, colleagues, and external resources.
