St. Mark’s School of Texas seeks an energetic and dynamic Lower School science teacher to coordinate and teach science in grades 1-4. The ideal candidate possesses extensive experience working with primary grade students, a broad background in the sciences, and a vision for designing a substantive and age appropriate science curriculum that excites boys about science. Additionally, strong candidates will demonstrate skills necessary for creating learning activities that incorporate science technology while being able to collaborate effectively with colleagues in Lower School to design robust learning experiences. Moreover, candidates must demonstrate an engaging classroom style and the ability to offer varied instruction to appeal to a diverse group of talented and interested boys.
This position presents a unique opportunity for a teacher to direct an innovative Lower School science curriculum in the new Winn Science Center, which will open in January 2019. The Winn Science Center features state-of-the-art science classrooms, an 85-seat planetarium, astronomical observation pad, a greenhouse, maker-space, computer science labs, Lower School garden, biotechnology lab, and a native Texas outdoor learning environment. The Lower School Science Specialist will design and conduct laboratory activities that teach the students fundamental science skills such as measurement, observation, experiment design, data analysis, graphing, etc.
In addition to classroom teachers, ideal candidates will also be able to contribute to additional aspects of the St. Mark’s program, including but not limited to coaching and the wilderness program. Finally, St. Mark’s is committed to character and leadership education, and candidates must be equally interested in developing these capacities in boys as they are committed to teaching content.
Teaching all sections of science grades 1-4. Working collaboratively with the homeroom teacher to craft effective lessons in science that are integrated into the broader curriculum
Developing and coordinating grades 1-4 science activities that leverage skills of other St. Mark’s science faculty and features of the science building. Examples include planning planetarium shows with the Director of Planetarium, lessons from the Director of Environmental Studies, engineering activities in the Maker Space, etc. The Lower School Science Specialist would be the principal developer of new science curriculum in grades 1-4, as necessary
Maintaining the lower school science lab, prep areas, and associated facilities, such as the garden and technology lab
Participating in the character and leadership education program
Contributing to the broader community by participating in the wilderness program, club program, or athletic program, depending on experience
Experience / Qualifications & Skills
A bachelor’s degree in elementary education or a field of science is required; a master’s degree in a field of science or science education is preferred
Five or more years of teaching science in lower and/or middle school; independent school experience is a plus.
Knowledge of varied teaching strategies to differentiate learning
Fluency with a variety of technology tools to advance learning and the ability to incorporate technology into instruction
Ability to develop hands-on activities that stimulate a love of learning, encourage problem solving, and develop creativity
Experience incorporating programming, hand tools, and automated tools such as 3D printers, in the construction of physical objects, robots, etc.
Passion for subject matter and for working with colleagues and with young boys
