Saint Mark’s school is an independent, Episcopal coeducational day school in Altadena, California. Founded in 1960, the school serves the needs of approximately 300 Preschool through Sixth grade students from diverse ethnic, racial, religious and economic backgrounds. The school is seeking a high energy, well organized teacher who has proven success teaching at the K-6 elementary or middle school level. The elementary orchestra/strings teacher is responsible for teaching violin, cello, or viola instruments.
The ideal candidate will be able to incorporate a method of musical instruction for beginning students, ( i.e. the Suzuki method) of musical instruction for beginning students and use varied approaches to classroom management in a responsive classroom. Qualified candidates should demonstrate a growth mindset, flexibility, a commitment to ongoing professional development, strong communication skills, an ability to work as part of a team, and the skills to engage and inspire students.
Elementary Strings Teacher
Part time; Exempt status
A degree focused in performance; or performance with a music education degree (recent graduates or students still pursuing their degree are welcome to apply)
At least one year of professional teaching experience
Ability to work with and relate well to students of all ages and levels
Ability to maintain positive relationships with parents
Can teach students of all levels (beginner - advanced)
Strong communication skills with students, colleagues and parents
Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Acting in a manner corresponding to the requirements of the Employee Handbook of Saint Mark’s School.
Exhibiting strong skills in cultural competency and a commitment to diversity and inclusivity.
Giving string music instruction to students in grades 3-6.
Supporting performance opportunities including the elementary Christmas program, Daniel Pearl Day, etc.
Supervising the elementary spring program including preparation and extra rehearsals as needed.
Coordinating with the music and performing arts teacher for the elementary Grandparents and Special Friends Day program.
