The Director of Student Learning Services is a full-time, twelve month position responsible for coordinating the provision of support for students with learning differences, reporting to the Head of School. She/he manages the work of the school psychologists, learning specialists, and tutors as part of a newly formed Department of Student Learning Services. This position works closely with Division Directors, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, department chairs, faculty, and school counselors. She/he also works directly with students and families as needed.
Essential functions include the following.
Coordinate and direct the efforts of the Department to support students with different learning styles and teachers in their efforts to advance students with different learning needs
Coordinate, and when necessary, carry out the observation of individual students displaying academic or behavioral difficulties and help assess their learning strengths and challenges
Participate in classroom instruction as needed
Coordinate the development and writing of student accommodation/learning plans with long-term goals and specific objectives
Ensure there are regular written student-progress reports to the school and parents with assessment results and recommendations of diagnostic testing and remedial programs for learning-related issues
Maintain confidential student records and keep accurate documentation of sessions, meetings, and assessments
Oversee and chair the Crisis Team
Oversee the initiation and scheduling of parent meetings as needed
Recommend in-school and community resources for identified students
Interact with professionals outside the school to support students
Coordinate and facilitate communication between student, family, school, and other involved professionals
Ensure the securing of standardized testing accommodations for qualifying students
Oversee standardized testing efforts in the Middle and Lower Schools
Analyze and report trends in data to administration and wider community
Assist Admissions with standardized testing
Network with learning specialists at other independent schools
Pursue professional development opportunities
Attend conferences and professional meetings in order to remain current with industry trends
Participate in committee, department, and staff meetings as well as school-sponsored events that would benefit from your area of expertise
Perform any other duties as assigned by the Head of School
Education: Master’s Degree required in Special Education or related field preferred.
Experience: 10 years relevant experience. Leadership/administration in independent schools preferred.
Knowledge of learning disabilities, psycho-educational tests, reports, and assistive technology
Knowledge of administering and interpreting assessments and test results, academic achievement, and diagnostic testing
Proven success as a leader in program development
Full understanding of differentiated instructional strategies across the curriculum
