About Glen Urquhart School
Glen Urquhart School is a leader in pre-K-8 education. We are a progressive, place and theme-based, developmentally-aligned school. For us, "progressive" means we are child-centered, with the questions and ideas of our students being as important in the learning process as the goals of the teachers. We are "place-based," meaning that the North Shore and greater Boston are as much our classroom as a room with four walls. We are "theme-based," in that each grade level is focused around a central question or idea. And we are "developmentally-aligned," meaning we are trained and aware of the ages and stages of children's growth.
Ahead of its time, Glen Urquhart School’s program was founded in 1977 on an experiential, place-based philosophy that integrated all subjects and created opportunities for students to be passionate in their pursuit of knowledge. At the core of our challenging academic program today is the student - and the excitement of discovery.
We have always believed that knowledge from different disciplines needs to be synthesized, because one discipline informs another. Our students learn their math facts and grammar rules. They study two world languages, learn how... to write a clear and convincing essay, and test complex scientific theories. Students apply their understanding in imaginative, intricate, and powerful ways. Our hands-on approach to the academic curriculum - from theme-based projects to field trips to lively debates - ensures that knowledge stays with students for a lifetime.
We believe in the power of curiosity, making mistakes, asking questions to find solutions, collaboration, and working as individuals for the greater good. We believe in being yourself, building each other up from the inside out, and exploring beyond the classroom walls. We believe that changing the world with ideas starts in kindergarten.
We also know that students thrive best when they receive intellectual challenge and emotional support in a caring environment. At Glen Urquhart School, we are deliberate about providing a structure for healthy emotional and social growth that promotes strong relationships and a positive self-image so that students can concentrate on their learning and reach their academic potential.
