Waynflete School invites applications for the position of general music teacher, in a combination of grades from kindergarten through fifth grade, beginning with the 2018-2019 school year. The School’s music program includes choral, instrumental, and general music components, with general music providing the grounding in experience, understanding, and skill for all other musical pursuits.
Lower School general music is singing-based and interdisciplinary with activities often bringing the various creative arts together. Key elements include: Composition and improvisation as students learn to use music as a tool for expression; development of music reading skills, critical listening skills, and artistic vocabulary; experience with pitched and unpitched classroom instruments as the gateway to further instrumental study; and exploration of varying musical traditions and cultures. Shared mission and philosophy as well as shared students and facilities necessitate a high degree of collaboration, vision, organization, and communication, both within the music department and in work with other members of the Lower School faculty and the Performing Arts Team. Creativity, initiative, collegiality, sense of humor, strong communication skills, and an eagerness to collaborate with others to advance the School’s artistic and strategic initiatives are essential.
A bachelor’s degree in music education with an emphasis on general/choral music is required. The ideal candidate will have classroom experience in general music and choral music, and experience incorporating Orff instruments, Kodaly methods, movement, drama, and music technology in the music classroom.
Waynflete School is committed to building a diverse community of students, faculty and staff. To apply please send a cover letter addressed to Lower School Director, Anne Hopkins, a resume, and three written references. Application materials should be sent to HR Assistant, Tarah Frederick, at firstname.lastname@example.org. Application review will begin immediately (first consideration given to completed applications submitted by April 27th) and the position will remain open until filled. No phone calls, please.
