The 5/6 Dean of Students is a full-time, year-round, administrative position responsible for facilitating the educational and social-emotional development of fifth and sixth grade students, supporting the Arts & Movement Team and Middle School Associate Teachers, proactively communicating with parents, building effective working relationships, and acting to support the school’s mission in action and word.

Successful candidates will have experience successfully demonstrating:
Middle school teaching experience, preferably working with gifted and twice exceptional students
Understanding of the expectations of an independent school culture
Leadership in implementing social and emotional learning curriculum
Strong leadership skills
Effective communication, both verbally and in writing, with students, parents, and staff
Problem solving with students, staff, and parents
Ability to lead difficult conversations with staff, students, and families with respect and grace
Build and maintain productive working relationships with various types of people and in various roles throughout the school
Commitment to professional development
Ability to maintain confidentiality
Strong candidates will have experience:
Familiarity with implementing accommodation plans of twice exceptional students (ADHD, Dyslexia, Dysgraphia, Dyscalculia, Asperger’s, Tourette syndrome, and like)
Background (combination of education and/or experience) in gifted education

Duties and Responsibilities:
Work with counselors and teachers to develop fifth and sixth grade Social Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum and support implementation by teaching faculty
Organize and lead weekly Child Study Team and/or Advisory SEL curricular meetings, in consultation with the counselors
Ensure individual student action plans are created, remain current, and are implemented by teaching faculty in consultation with counselors
Educate and mentor teachers to meet the accommodations of twice exceptional students with learning/behavioral needs
Work with teachers to create consistent positive classroom management strategies and work in conjunction with the Middle School Head to effectively manage student discipline
Coordinate support services for students in the areas of academics, student behavior, or other concerns as appropriate
Proactively communicate with parents through a variety of means and hold conferences as needed to discuss individual student progress and school programs
Supervision of Arts & Movement Team, providing twice a year observation and feedback
Supervision and support of Middle School Associate Teachers, providing professional growth feedback
Oversee the formation of yearly Middle School Arts & Movement curricular options, assignment of middle school students to classes, and logistics for Fall and Spring Arts Nights
Work with Middle School Special Programs Coordinator to ensure organizational logistics and curricular relevance of 5th and 6th grade partnerships (off campus day and overnight trips) and curricular showcases, and support 7th and 8th grades as needed
Cultivate leadership potential of student body and act as liaison with student groups as assigned by Middle School Head (i.e., 8th Grade Be a Leader Project, Student Council, Service Club, Diversity Club)
Keep the Middle School Head apprised of areas of concern, strategies, and parent communications
Fulfill duties of Middle School Head in their absence
Ability to adapt and readily take on new duties as requested by the Head of School or Middle School Head
